Gibson String Spacing - Trembucker spacing stock for regular spaced strings?

I've been toying with different pickup combos for my two SGs, a Gibson and an Epiphone, and I came across some info on the web that said Gibson started using F-spaced/Trembucker spacing on their guitars with TOMs since 1999, while the vintage guitars had the regular spacing.

So I pulled out my steel rule and checked. My Epiphone guitars have regular pickup spacing. My Gibson SG, made in 2002, has Trembucker spacing on the stock pickups, but the strings are just at the bridge as wide as the Epiphones. The result is that the high E string is just to the inside of the 498T's outermost pole piece rather than over it. So if I do put in new pups, I guess I'm going to go for regular spacing because it looks like that's what the strings are spaced for despite the pole piece spacing on the pickups. But why would Gibson put a TB spaced pickup in a guitar with regular string spacing? Is it this way with other people's Gibsons?
