Gibson Studio w/ Ebony fretboard- high output pickup??

Re: Gibson Studio w/ Ebony fretboard- high output pickup??

Only on this forum... even then the guys around here that like the JB in the LP or mahogany get ignored.

Maybe not ignored but somewhat dismissed.........1 opinion amongst multitudes of opposing ones ends up seeming like an anomaly. Which is why I worded my post very carefully.

Its far more than 1 though that gets dismissed...

But still there is a vast majority that find it unusable, or at the very least have the need then to buy magnets worth half the original purchase price to get it to work.

Its all about giving the OP a viable solution that is likely to work first off (that being the very point of the forum), not an exercise in personal affirmation.

I don't think it's a vast majority, but rather a very vocal minority. I used a JB in an LP studio for several years and quite liked it. I did get tired of the LP Studio, and I went with something else when I got my LPC. (But largely because I have a JB equipped guitar and I wanted a different tonality)

And no magnet swaps were necessary, it sounded good. So far I have played with a couple magnet swaps in a DD, but they are just goofing around in my opinion. I did like the a9 better than stock though.

But a JB in an LP is a classic that I have seen two users call unusable. How many of us have used it with success I wonder? Is it my favorite? No, not really, but in my experience, I have never found the JB to be my favorite, but it is always pretty good, sometimes excellent.

I will be the odd man out an say Dimarzio Transitions, they are ceramic but do not sound that way.

Hey - first of all, I play in that band (except for the wussy Journey/Imagine Dragons part....)!!!
And amp wise, I think you are good.

That said - I REALLY think a distortion with the stock 300k pots will be just fine, or a Custom.
Distortion actually cleans up pretty well for what it is. Custom as well, can be turned down to be 59-esque.

If you don't dig EITHER of those - an A8 mag may very well be what you need.
Also - It does seem the Black Winter is the new Distortion. Ignore the marketing.

The ebony, IMO, adds more snap/quickness to the attack than actual brightness.

Magnets only tell part of the story. I had previously tried 3 other triple ceramic pickups. Dirty fingers, Aftermath and invader. I hated all of them and for very different reasons. Invader was muddy IMO, the Aftermath was shrill, and well, the df was not memorable in any good way. But a ceramic magnet really tells you a very tiny piece of the story. In general, other pickups I like tend to be a5 or a2 loaded. I love the Wolfetone Marshallhead. I have an excellent set of Alnico BKP Nailbombs. Black Winters are IMO in a different category than most production duncans. They feel more like a custom shop or boutique pickup to me. I took out most BKPs I had for BWs and I had quite a few. The clarity is fantastic. I would say I find that I can use my volume and tone knob and get all manner of wonderful tones. (Normally I am a V/T on 10 guy) Don't get me wrong, I love them that way too, but a lot of pickups, once you start cutting volume or treble, I just don't feel like I get enough of anything.

99% of the time I am in standard tuning. Drop D when not, occasionally d# standard or dadgad. I am not a droptune fan.
Yes, I am a BW fanboy at this point I am afraid.

True that my guy! Magnets are just a small part of the equation. You got me leaning towards those e Black Winters. Hell, if I can play Tracy Chapman AND Metallica with one guitar then wooo! That would be killer.

I've heard tell that the Full Shred is sort of picky about, well... picking. Like it really enunciated the notes clearly. That may not help me too much after a couple of stage shots of whiskey har har har! But that does sound like an interesting attribute

Yeah, dude has me thinking on those bad boys pretty hard. I had an op to get a pair brand new for just over a hunnit bucks and if I hadn't had been so hard up for cash I would have jumped on them!

Re: Gibson Studio w/ Ebony fretboard- high output pickup??

That was moooonths ago so I naturally forgot about them. They seemed to have crept back into my head. Like I says, I'd like to explore my options before I drop damn near $200 on a pair of pickups.
