Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

Actually i just realized how tiny he was that may be why it seems like the LP was bigger who knows :)

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

sorry didnt search before i posted i was pretty jacked when i got the email.

but what was the white les paul and was it thicker body wise?

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

the white les paul was a normal les paul custom

it turned yellow with age like most white les paul customs do

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

whats the point of Gibson making a Gibson LP Custom, putting randy's name on it and charging like 7k-8k?? Wasnt Radny's LP just a normal, stock, LP custom? someone can just go out and buy a stock, white, LP custom and call it a day.

The Marshall 1959RR is the more important part of randy's tone anyways (minus his hands of course).

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

well technically Randy's was a Norlin pancake / sandwich body so this is the first time they've done the pancake sandwich since the Norlin era.

and we have this conversation every time they release a signature edition guitar for a niche audience of collectors...they're not for guys like us.

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

Yeah, Norlin pancake... neck volute... maybe even a 3-piece neck and I'll bet it's slimmer than your '60s taper too...

Of course, if you really honestly do want a guitar just like Randy's, you could always buy a real 1974 white LP Custom. The reissue will probably sell for between 5 and 7k?

Here's a real one with a BIN of $3450

Of course it's got an old neck repair, but I sure can't see it in the pics...

What precisely *is a "pancake/sandwich" body? Besides from making me hungry, I would really like to know.

It's sort of flabby around the middle and undefined... maybe a little sweaty and hairy... you know, the kind of body you get from eating pancake sandwiches.

Add some man bewbs, and I'd say I have a Norlin body then.

1 slice wonderbread
1 pancake
butter, syrup, et all
1 slice wonderbread

you're the proud builder of a delicious new pancake sandwich

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

and those Norlin era customs you could buy instead

a) will have somebody else's cooties on it and
b) won't be the LIMITED SUPER RANDY EDITIONS so it won't shoot up in collector value any time soon

Re: Gibson to Reproduce Classic Randy Rhoads Les Paul

I apologize Evan and company, but eff Gibson. This will be an epic fail as most of their stuff like this is any more. It's a marketing tool. No normal, even many greater than mortal guitar players will be able to afford it. Who knows what they will really do with it (not that they can't make it right.

Randy played a 79 I believe. Contrary to popular belief, not all Norlins are pancake. It will likely have a three piece maple neck (but not necessarilly). The neck is thicker than a 60's slim taper, it is infinitely stronger than any mahogany single piece, and adds a nice brightness to the LP. The pickups in Randy's were stock. If you are going to suck up your tone with a line of MXR pedals why get decent pups? If anything, pancake pushed the mids a little towards the higher end, and takes out some mud form the neck because of the mahogany slab (depending on the mahagony). You wouldn't b!ich a second about a BC Rich with 12 peices glued together - why the issue with the LP. Speak of that which know dudes!

Turn on KISS ALIVE. You know that sound. And you agree it is awesome. That's a maple neck pancake body Les Paul. Get over it. A lot of great tunes were rocked on Norlins. Get over your blues-lawyer sounding selves.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled Gibson will mess it up and over price it.

But - you want a Randy guitar? Musicians friend was selling cream Alpines a while back for less than 4k, and here is the real deal:
