@#$&$&@ gibson, why so much $$$

The method of construction has little to do with sustain or "tone." It has more to do with materials and the workmanship.

If a set neck sustains "better" than a bolt on, then a neck thru should sustain "better." But that's not true, IME.

Bringing up Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton or David Gilmour doesn't give any validity to your posts, neither does posting a picture of Jimmy Page making a funny face.

So since a Ferrari is not made in the U.S., once it is on American soil it's not a real Ferrari anymore? If it says Fender and is made in a plant owned by Fender, it's a real Fender!

Does Fender make a MIA model Strat for $400? Does Fender make any $400 MIA model? Anything branded "Gibson" is made in the USA.

Ok, and the point is?

Re: @#$&$&@ gibson, why so much $$$

Gibson does not build guitars for the working musician anymore. They build guitars for rich people who have nothing better to do than spend 3 to 6 grand on one of the new second rate Les Pauls.

I didn't know you had to be rich to afford an $800 guitar.

Re: @#$&$&@ gibson, why so much $$$

dunno- i did own a gib howard roberts fusion for quite a few years. I loved the instrument's playability, and it was built really well. Problem was, as it was a semi-hollow made of maple, the sound for jazz or fusion just wasnt there. in fact, i was getting a better jazz sound out of my HH equipped ernie ball...a change of pickups may have helped, but I believe when you spend a lot of money on a guitar, you should get exactly what you want. As a working pro who doesn't mind spending $$ on instruments that do what I need, I have to say that when you spend a lot of $, it is worth getting a custom instrument. I'd rather give my money to a shop that gives me 1 on 1 support, doesn't make me go through a dealer, will return my calls within an hour, and build exactly what I want. Neither Gibson nor Fender allows this- their 'custom' lines are fancy words for 'expensive', and you have to choose between a few models which they won't alter. Not exactly Custom, at all.

The point is any "real Gibson" is made in the US. Any "Gibson" made outside of the US is not branded as "Gibson." While you'll find <$400 Epiphones, you equally don't find <$400 MIA Fenders.

Nobody complains about Fender guitars that are $2000-$3000 and those are alder and ash bodies with bolted on necks, nobody complains about the $2000+ guitars from Ibanez that have basswood bodies, or the $2000+ made in japan ESP guitars, the nearly $3000 made in japan Gretsch guitars, the close to (and over in some cases) $3000 Dean guitars...so why does everybody feel the need to hate Gibson?

On the contrary.. I think Fender blows too that they are charging $1200 and up for a strat. The relic ones especially amuse me. $1700 for something beat up.. Ive played a bunch of these expensive strats, and NONE sound better or play better to me than my old Japanese Squier.

Now, with Gibsons... First, I think they are overpriced to begin with, but I could understand economics enough to expect that they will still bump the price every other year or so to match inflation.. But EVERY time I go into GC, the price on the Studios (prob all of them, but I watch the studio cuz its the only model I have chance to own) has gone up about $100. I mentioned it out loud the last time and 2 other customers said, yeah they were noticing the same thing. They were just $1099 last year. 6 or 7 months ago. Last week they have been marked to $1399. And they dont seem as nice.
It just isnt right..
Now I love my Studio. 04 model bought used. But Ive compared it repeatedly back to back with my Michael Kelly Patriot Custom and the difference in tone is miniscule. And the Kelly has a tone pro bridge, sheilded cavity, better fret work and I got it with a very nice hard case for $499.
No, Im not trying to sell the Kellys to you. But merely stressing the point that with those, Tokais and others avail, we are really getting it put to us for that Brand name...

You cannot get a new les paul for $800.00, but you can buy a cheap made in korea epiphone for that price.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to be a US citizen to work in the US, correct?

So, you have tthe same basic design, one built in Mexico by Mexicans and one built in the US by Americans.

As far as materials and factory accomodations, the same can be said for Gibson and Epi or an other maker with a Us line and an offshore line (PRS and their SE's).

Using your logic, all of my Epi's would automatically become Giby's. Sorry, it just doesn't work that way. ;)

Epi's usually don't even copy gibbys in anything except for looks. Most are alder.

On the other hand an MiM tele will have an alder body like the MIA version. An MiM and a MiA will sound very similar given the same electronics. An Epi and a gibby will sound nothing alike even with the same electronics.

How many MIA strats can you get new for $650. This is made in america, by real americans and is actually a very nice guitar.

Buy one of these fine guitars built for the working Musician and you will have the best of both worlds.

What "both worlds?" The Strat control layout and switching scheme doesn't work for me. Why would that even interest someone that has no use for that layout?
