I dont think brand, where it was made or who eles plays it should have any bearing on which guitar you buy. If it plays good and sounds good who give a somethin about anything eles.
If I'm economically minded it does.
Holy crap I can't believe I'm getting into this thread.
Let me tell all of you a story...
About 3 years ago I traded of my Gibson LP Custom, which was supposed to be my grail guitar, off for a Dr. Z Maz Jr. Why? The custom was a turd. It weighed in around 12-13lbs, the peghead inlays were so-so at best when you looked closely at it, and the fretwork was atrocious!!!
That night I played a red 1997 R8 with Ants.
I couldn't believe that guitar came out of the same factory/state/country as the custom. I told that guy if he ever wanted to unload it he needed to call me.
After Henry J put all emphasis on profit and my local dealer was ousted from Gibson I decided to boycott Gibson.
A year later I picked up a Heritage H-150. Awesome AWESOME guitar. The build quality is definitely up there with the Custom shop, and it was very homey feeling. The fingerboard had real MOP inlays which I really liked. The only issue I had was (A) Headstock (I don't hate it like most) (B) No peghead inlay. I don't know why that bothered me but it did, the same thing with a LP studio.
About 2-3 months ago I started thinking that I wanted a larger neck, being I already had the Heritage, and their profiles are more modern I started thinking about maybe picking up a historic Gibson. I still have/had problems with Henry J, but I figured that there was some more to the dealership thing than I was being told by my local dealer since I saw there STILL were some Ma and Pop dealers that sold Gibson.
About a month ago I received a call from the guy who I got the Dr. Z from asking me if I was still interested in the guitar. That kind of caught me off guard since I wasn't thinking of getting anything for sometime, and I hadn't reconciled the issues in my mind. He let me borrow the guitar for a few days and I tell you truly, I liked it better than the Heritage. Maybe it's just that my tastes have changed, I don't know but the larger neck felt more natural to me, and the long neck tenon had some kind of mojo going on and the notes had extra definition. I wasn't as sold on the Ants as I once had been, but I could deal. A week later I bought the guitar minus the Ants and with a Seth.
Gibson turns out their share of turds, but their great guitars are very inspiring.
The famous people playing brands of guitars means nothing to me, I care about tone, and feel.
