Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I generally visualise the middle example. My, those cable channels are getting generous nowadays.

Also transpose the larger holes to your bank account.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

My buddy has a chambered LP Studio that is killer sounding. Reminds me a lot of the Malcolm Young Gretsch I had sonically but plays like an LP. Think I'll be getting one eventually

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I have an '07 that is chambered, and it kills. I also have solid, and the old style weight relieved. I buy my guitars based on how they sound, so how they are routed is not that big a deal to me. What did bother me was how Gibson management handled the whole thing when the chambering started. Had they been more upfront about it, I think it would have been better received.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I'm interested in seeing the Billy Gibbons level of weight relief.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

Those can't be Gibsons; there is no crappy router flash all over the cavities!

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I have several chambered LPs. Two Supremes, an Elegant, and two Classic Antiques. Each type has different chambering. The Cloud 9 Les Paul Historics had a different pattern still.

My two 1960 Classic Premium Plus LPs are "swiss-cheesed", and the Historics are all completely solid. Surprisingly, while the Classic Antiques are noticeably lighter than the others, the 1960 Classics, the Supremes, the Elegant and the Historics all weigh about the same, between 8.9 and 9.2 lbs.

Bottom line: for me, I'm not sure it makes a lot of difference. A good guitar is a good guitar and all of these sound good.

I like the chambered one. Could really impact tone in an interesting way. Other than that I like the solid slab of mahogany.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I didnt know this was a secret... Gibson has never really hid the fact that they weight relieved guitars and has always stated what the distinction between chambered and relieved is.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

^ Really???

So you didn't know that the 9 holes bit started in 82, and they were forced to admit 20 odd years later that their advertisingof LP's as 'solid' forthose years had been erroneous.

Also chambering came in and wasn't advertised initially.

Its only after that latest problem that they have been upfront.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I'd be more willing to try a chambered LP over a solid one. Pretty sure no one would notice the difference till I told em.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I prefer the middle pattern, but as many of you noted, it's ultimately all about the tone.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

<cut>My, those cable channels are getting generous nowadays.

Seriously... Why is the cable channel deeper than even the pickup screw places?

On the chambered body, they did have trouble with feedback. I believe that's why they came up with the other weight-relieved options. Tonally they can sound great, until a certain SPL boundary is reached.

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

Isn't the Epiphone Ultra (III?) LP chambered? Could be a cheaper alternative for trying a chambered version out.

Oh, really? :scratchch

Where exactly did you get this bit of info? By an authoritative and verifiable source, of course, isn't it?

I can't wait to see the link... ;)

Re: Gibson's meaning of "weight relief" and "chambering"

I dunno how important it is, but there are two types of (non-modern) chambered LPs...

The one on the left is a custom shop cloud 9 LP, and the one on the right is a BFG.
