Re: Gibson's reasoning for running their retailers offline is now unveiled.

What CAN'T you buy on Amazon.com now?!

Re: Gibson's reasoning for running their retailers offline is now unveiled.

It seems, from the overwhelming response from guitarists, that Gibson has done an about face. Stores that had previously taken pics down advertising stock have now put them back up (like Wilcutts).

I doubt it was the responce from guitarists. I really don't think they care about them. I suspect it was their retailers going ape****.

From the looks of it, the Amazon site is somehow relatated to Musician's Friend, which part of Guitar Centre, which is somehow bedmates with Gibson.......

It's just an agreement with MF. Nothing to get upset about. Amazon does this with lots of companies.

Wow. That's very interesting... Those Gibbys...

Re: Gibson's reasoning for running their retailers offline is now unveiled.

Why all the Gibson bashing? They aren't some evil corporation, just a business looking to expand their profits in an economic lull, not to mention all the competition they have. Put away the incense, patchouli oil, and protest banners, and realize that guitar companies are in the business of making money, just like all companies.
They didn't ASK for every company to rip their designs, cutting into their profits, and as far as I'm concerned, their quality hasn't dwindled. They just make 100 times more guitars than they did in the 50's, and to be honest, many of THOSE didn't play any better than the average one off the wall in 2004. Give it a rest already.

Re: Gibson's reasoning for running their retailers offline is now unveiled.

There's a lot of Gibson bashing, and rightfully so. What was supposed to be this phenomenal company that made such models as the les paul, the ICON of rock and roll guitars, is now a joke.

They made very stupid business decisions. Let's all face it, atleast 75% of their products are garbage now. I can't say how many lps I've played in stores that suffered from bad craftsmanship and tone. The original PAFs ruled. Now what do we get? Whoop de doo... it's the Classic 57s and the Burstbuckers... now those are AMAZING pickups ;) The 490/498s I had in my Standard were absolutely useless.

Gibson just doesn't know how to make a quality instrument anymore. If you want a good instrument from them, you need to buy a historic, custom shop guitar.

I realize that there are people out there that still are loyal to Gibson, and that's great for them, because I can buy a better instrument at much less than what they charge for their subpar woods and build quality.

I will admit that the Standard I used to own was nice, but since I have something better now, I really don't miss it. Wouldn't mind a nice jazz box or acoustic, but that's for further down the road.

Gibson is a business. Like any other business, they've had to expand their product line and reach out to new demographics to remain competitive. In this case, it means production lines and parts that aren't of the same high quality as their historic models. I don't fault them for it. IMO, they still make great instruments. QC may be hit and miss, but there are good ones out there. I played several LPs that were all good before I bought my Studio model. The LP I ended up buying was perfect from the factory and was comfortable to me. Who knows, maybe the last guy that played it found it uncomfortable or didn't like the tone. But hey since when was guitar preference never subjective?

The 490/498 set wasn't for you, but that doesn't mean that they are junk pickups. I happen to like the 490/498 set in my Studio and they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

I don't mean to sound like I'm attacking you, I'm just getting tired of people verbally attacking these good companies simply because of their subjective opinions.
