Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer

Re: Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer

Is it a regular reissue? If so, it's probably worth more than a typical one. Take photos of it and send them to Gruhn Guitars in Nashville (www.gruhnguitars.com i think). They'll do a decent appraisal. Or just call them and ask for their opinion before having it appraised. George Gruhn is one of the top vintage people in the world.

I think gibsun is a chinese import.

but judging by the lack of grammer (like I have any room to talk) and poor spelling, I'm guessing he means Gibson.

Re: Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer

Yeah, I'd think the korina versions would be more sought after, but I'm far from an expert. Definitely check with those guys.

Don't say that, you'll hurt Korina's feelings
Wood may have feelings but, finishes do not have feelings. I say we are safe!

Re: Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer

Here's why I justify calling it Korina. I have a Korina/Limba superstrat that I built. I didn't stain the wood, I merely put a few coats of tru-oil on it, then clearcoated it. Once it was clearcoated, it yellowed quickly to the yellow finish that you call Korina, so this "Limba" naturally has the "Korina" finish to it, so I call it Korina.

That's just my superstrat though, since I bought the bare unfinished body from Musikraft and know it is Korina. You can get Luan or bleached mahogany, stain it, and give a Korina finish to it, the same way you can take Minwax's Honduran Mahogany stain, stain pine with it, and call the finish Honduran Mahogany, even though it's pine.

OK, so you have a "limba" strat with a "Korina" finish then? Most guitars that are labeled as Korina, are NOT limba! Unless you are spending some $$$$!!!! There are those on here that swear that Korina is the type of wood and thats what the wood is called. They also seem to think that most guitars that come from the factory made by Epiphone are actually real Limba when they are labeled as "Korina". You were just pulling my chain in your first post huh???

Re: Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer

It doesn't matter what colour it is or what colour you pain it...there are NO Korina trees anywhere in the world and there is no finish on this planet called Limba...Limba is a wood, korina is a finish. If your Limba guitar has a honey colour to it naturally then good for you but calling it korina wood keeps a long time myth alive...a myth that is completely wrong!

And So is a Floyd Rose guitar

Yeah, I know what it is, I am a luthier for gods sake.

Korina=finish Limba=wood

Alot of manufactuers have started calling the wood Korina when that name is not the correct name. I guess alot of dummy players would get confused if it was actually called by its real name, Korina!

At least Floyd Rose calls it by its real name. They should say, misinformed players reffer to it as "korina"

WORD!!!! Why is this so hard to get through players heads?

Re: Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer

That Hamer is made from white limba and the FR guitar is made from Black limba...both of those guitars have a honey (Korina) stain. I see that they are both saying that the guitars in question are Korina but they are wrong...period!

Re: Gibsun 1959 Korina Explorer
