Re: Gigbag vs. Case

Case it's the best protection for a guitar if you are moving it out of one room. Gigbags are really just dust covers.

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

I'll use my Godin gig bag 90% of the time. It's lighter and easier to transport than a harshell case, and it fits my Charvel or my Godin. The padding is also pretty awesome on it, about 3/4 of an inch on all sides of the guitar. Not roadie tough, but then again I don't have roadies . . .

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

Case 100% of the time.

+1. Most stages are small and crowded, and you're playing for people who are consuming alcohol; too many things can happen. Play long enough and you'll see and hear about what can go wrong. Gouges, broken necks, spilled drinks, etc. and bags don't prevent damage from all of these mishaps. At home I don't have enough hard cases for everything, and some are in gig bags, but when I go to a gig, I always take two guitars, and both are in cases (which sometimes means switching cases and bags around at home first).

But, there are some very nice thick, firm gig bags, that are almost as good as a case. Problem is, they cost as much, or more than a hard case.

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

I have a hard case for every guitar. I don't think I ever bring the hard case to rehearsal because it just takes up room in the space.

And for gigs I transport the guitar in a gig bag because they have backpack type straps and I can carry it on my back while I carry something else in my arms. I have yet to have a problem at a show. But I am very careful about where I put my gear at the club.

The one ding that I got at a gig was my own doing.

Given that I play usually in very congested parts of town, the fewer trips I need to make from the car is crucial. Often I'm not parked very close to the club and a hard case can be bulky.

But no doubt they provide much better protection

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

At home, I have all my guitars in hard cases, but I use a Reunion Blues Continental gig bag to transport guitars to gigs. Those are lighter, softer, easier to transport, and protect better than most hard cases. Downside is they aren't cheap. But quality often isn't. I'll never mess with a hard cases again after using the Reunion Blues gig bag

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

I have a homemade, cheap Strat so I don't see the point in a case yet. You can take a Tele or a Strat, use it for a couple rounds of cricket, fend off a couple car jackers and then play a gig and it's fine. Besides, I bought a fairly nice bag and I like being able to strap it to my back and take it to a jam on my bike, something I couldn't really do with a case. However, if I buy the Agile LP I'm looking at, I'll probably need a case.

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

I carry some guitars around in a gigbag that I got with a used MusicYo Kramer that I bought. I feel like I'm tempting fate, but the guitars that go in it are mostly cheap and nothing special. They also tend to have non-angled headstocks, which reduces the risk.

On the other hand, I still carry my Faded V around in the gig bag that came with it. I know I need to get a case for it, as it's one of my most fragile guitars and also the one I tend to play out with. There are a lot of choices, though. I'm not sure which way to go: Gibson, SKB, Coffin?

I always carry my Jacksons in a hardshell case. I have three of them and two cases, so I can usually make things work. The Les Pauls have a case between them, so that's okay. And there's a generic case that will fit an Ibanez or a Fender. The bass and the classical have hardshell cases, too. Any Strats or Teles will need tweed hardshell cases; there's just no other way to do it.

Gigbag vs. Case

I don't have any soft cases so by default I'm a hard case kind of guy. I might buy a soft case in the future because they are convenient

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

Another factor is rectangle vs fitted hard cases. A big, boxy hard case is hard to move around without hitting someone or something. Fitted cases are much better.

Case

My guitars often travel in a trailer with cabinets and ish shifting around

don't need to leave a headstock in Toledo...

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

Hard case. Reason - if I've paid for a guitar, I'd like to keep it in one piece.

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

the tele rides in a hard case, and the G&L Tribute rides in the best gig bag I've ever seen given with a guitar that inexpensive.

Re: Gigbag vs. Case

I play Gibsons most of the time. Hard cases for my guitars.

The legendary Gibson Les Paul formerly owned by both Peter Green and the late Gary Moore had its headstock broken off in a road traffic whilst inside a hardshell case in the back of Moore's car.

And if it was in a gig bag...it might have been in a dozen pieces. HSC's aren't like a bank vault, but they're better than a gig bag.

Agreed. When Moore recounted the story to a UK guitar magazine, he never disclosed how badly the rear end of his car had been mashed.
