I just got spammed this from jemsite: http://www.gillguitar.com/default.asp

Yeah yeah, I know it's just another Chinese knock-off site, but the LP kit intrigues me. Maybe it's worth a shot for a cheap project?

$211.15 shipped.

0 info.

if the wood is worth anything at all, that may not be a bad deal.. be fun.. Im sure the hardware is prolly poo. Im really wanting to build something.. Im just stuck in an apt now..

Your assignment, try it and report back...

Re: Gill Guitars... What the F is this S?

Like they say you get what you pay for. If your after a project (and really odds are you wont use anything but the body and neck) and dont mind that you might have to do lots of fitting and finishing then it might a fun thing to get into.

But wouldnt take much for the wood working to be off and it would be a total nightmare. Without knowing anything about the companies reputation I would feel sketchy about it.

Re: Gill Guitars... What the F is this S?

Yeeeaaah. The more I think about it, the less I want to proceed. All of the hardware will definitely be junk so I'm paying a little over $100 for a neck and $100 for a body that could be complete crap. Not to mention how stupid it would be to give them my CC info...

But yeah; I forgot how cheap GF's kits were... I'll definitely be going that route if I need a kit.

For similar money, I think buying one of Agile guitars low end model is better, they're korean made, which quality wise on par with schecter and ESP-LTD low end models - comes with grover tuners, setneck, and best of all, all assembled and painted for you.

But isnt the idea of the kit to build it? You do have a point but you miss out on the fun of doing it yourself.

Ah yes, I think Rondo music sell kits as well.

However, but my approach would be different, if I was going to make a kit guitar, I'd be more particular about what wood I want and where it's from, etc, and it would not end up being cheap. Making kit guitar just for the sake of it, I couldn't do it, I mean I still got old model air planes from decade ago that I never made. :biglaugh:

Re: Gill Guitars... What the F is this S?

i'd give it a shot, don't underestimate the chinese quality it's slowly getting better

I see chinese quality up close and personal every day and the only stuff that gets made here thats worth a crap is stuff that a foreign company is fronting and demanding quality control.

You walk into a music store here and what do you see? Guitars made in America and Japan.

Hell i see more Gibsons being played and being sold than i do Epi's here.

Re: Gill Guitars... What the F is this S?

I wouldn't touch that kit. There are much better kits available from North American makers. I have a SG Jr. kit from Precision Guitar Kits and would easily buy another one. They have a LP kit too. It doesn't come with hardware but that leaves you to get what you want.

Re: Gill Guitars... What the F is this S?

I'll pass. I only like Les Paul style guitars with block inlays not dots.

You mean you see more Gibsuns than Epiphoneys! Ha!

After all, the biggest segment of the counterfeit guitar market stemming from China revolves around Gibson knock-offs! I've been all over China and wouldn't be surpised if many of the "USA" models you've seen in some of the stores there are just higher quality counterfeits. Not all are fake, of course, but the odds that some buyers are being scammed are more disturbing than most probably realize!

There ARE some decent Made-In-China guitars, but you are right, without the pressure of a company with $$$ demanding consistency and throwing out the bad stuff, the Chinese "manufacturers" try to get away with the absolute least that they possibly can. Over there, it's all about quantity, not pride in workmanship. "If it looks close, it's good enough!" Sad, really.

$225 + shipping.

Real Flame Maple top and single cutaway solid Mahogany arch top body
Full body and neck binding
Set-in Maple neck with Rosewood fretboard and trapezodial inlays
Grover Die Cast tuners
Made in Korea

Give this one some black hardware, install an uncovered '59 / Custom set, and this thing would kill.

Re: Gill Guitars... What the F is this S?

Just over two hundred greenbacks for a guitar of roughly the same quality as an Epi LP-100 ... and you have to assemble it yourself? Even the worst liar on Craigslist would give you a better deal than that.
