Gilmour Tribute Strat

According to Wikipedia:

In November of 2006, Fender announced that they will be issuing a replica of Gilmour's modified black Stratocaster. David's official blog confirmed that it will be released in late 2007, to coincide with the release of the 'Remember That Night' DVD.

Does anyone plan to run out and get one of these? I think letting Gilmour play his own and buying the DVD makes more sense, but I am partial to black Strats.

I was just curious.

Well it all just depends...if I really wanted one I'd just DIY!

You could get a black Jimmy Vaughan Strat, add a black guardplate and some alnico II Duncans and be so close I bet even David would like it!

that could all be done for less that a grand, the DG Tribute will clearly have a 5 figure price tag

I wonder if they'll route the gutar for a Kahler then fill in the route and put a vintage trem back on it?!

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

It's about selling the name, which I'm sure will make Gilmour some money from those who can't whip one together themselves.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

I think the "allure" of something magical is kind of lost with someone like Gilmour in reference to that guitar.

A total replica of it with the routed for Kahler trem and all, begurdgingly I will admit that some folks would jump at it. It is, after all, an axe with some history to it.

His red Reissue with EMG's and the chopped whammy bar, now there's something that has some mystique to it. It's different enough and he has played it enough that I can see it qualifying as something that someone can't just slap together easily.

It's going to be a standard artist model, not a tribute one, so we shouldn't get all the wear and tear. I'm with you on the JV idea!

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Actually, my '77 strat is somewhat reminiscent of his EMG strat.

Now to chop that whammy... :burnout:

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

well i am a huge Gilmour fan.....i picked the guitar because of him and i really think he IS the guitarist for the THINKING men........That said i definately won't buy the gilmour strat........you can very well build your own strat with all the appointments Gilmour chooses..........Even uncle David's strats are essentially partsocasters.....so why spend 4000$ for a partsocaster?

If you get the EMG Gilmour set you'll nail his tone. I like the idea of using a JV Candy Apple Red Strat to copy DG's red strat- I may have to do that

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

I love the sound from this guitar more than the look. If I wanted it I'd fit the pickups to a similar spec guitar to my taste. I'd still be missing DG's being!

For us that grew up with PF...that is just not "the" sound by a long shot....like his sounds best with the passives.
The EMGs are glassy cold and yucky, and he do not use them anymore either.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

well i wouldn't define the tone he gets with the emgs cold..........i think his pulse tone is far from being cold.......So i like both his pre emg sound as well as his emg period.....

What i did not like is his recent sound on the OAI album............

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Personally I love my DG EMG set, and the Pulse and DSoT tone too. Yup it is true that Dave played his old Strat for the last tour, but I am not aware that he has declared he is not playing the Red EMG Strat, or that he's sending back his EMG pay cheques. I am aware that he wanted to make a distinguishable break and change from it being a Pink Floyd album and tour. BTW I also like the OaI tone, but I won't be buying a signature Gilmour Strat, mostly because I don't need another Black Strat.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

David Gilmour's rig has changed since his recent solo album, which may be why he's using the black strat with passives rather than the red one with EMG's. For example, look at his custom pedalboard that was built for last year's tour. Maybe this pedalboard is the reason no many people, including myself, are happy with his solo album tone.

The black strat he's using was the one he recorded Comfortably Numb with- which he acknowledged was his best solo. However, that was before he has it routed for a Kahler, then had the Kahler removed, route filled in, then replaced with a vintage trem. He's changed the neck on that guitar several times. At the time Comfortably Numb was recorded it had stock Fender single coils, then replaced with Dimarzios, then I hear he has Duncans in it now.

Personally, I think the Kahler installation and removal probably ruined the guitar and whatever magical tone it had in it.

He began using EMG's while he toured since they didn't have the noise associated with single coils. I'm pretty sure he used them in the studio on A Momentary Lapse of Reason and the Division Bell.

EMG's are anything but cold and yucky when played through a tube amp.

So right now I'm just looking for a Candy Apple Red strat with an aged laquer maple neck to put an EMG David Gilmour set in. The Jimmy Vaughn looks like the best bet since it's got the right tremolo and tuners

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

I do not care...I really really dislike EMGs quite alot....hate that dreadful tone they have.
Never liked the sound he had with those...while the playing and music was great...the sound of those things....ew!
The black strat has lost its magic??
Well that is some fullrange ears you have there???!;)
Sure it has...that is why he uses it...lol
By the way...most that I know who has liked PF for a great many years....loves the sound he has now!
Myself included...good riddance to those stinking EMGs!
:D

Cool link!

Maybe look at an EJ strat... the JV isn't laquer, that ones poly.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

this is gilmour's strat I like best:

I think he later put a maple neck on it, but I like it with rosewood.
