Gilmour Tribute Strat

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

I don't care for Jimmy Vaughn, and never heard his music or the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Ummm... hey, 'splain this one to me...

If you've NEVER heard any of Jimmy Vaughns music... how exactly could you "not care for" him or have any kind of judement/thoughts at all?!?

OK- I heard a few Fabulous Thunderbird songs and didn't care for them. Haven't listened to complete albums, or heard any buzz about a great Jimmy Vaughn album or performance. To me, he's the Jim Belushi of guitarists.

Still, his signature strat is awesome

I find the shadow comparison annoying and unnecessary at best.

Suggestion: Don't hold Jimmy Vaughan up to Stevie's standards, unless you plan on doing that with every guitarist. It's not his fault that his brother was the better guitarist; taken on his own, Jimmy is still great. I think he'd like to be remembered for his own music, not as Stevie Lite.

Glad you like the Belushi Strat, btw.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Jimmie Vaughan is the total opposite of Stevie...but nobody remembers what Jimmie used to play in his youth, Jeff Beck stuff and such...he has just evolved into a much more economical player...and to me is everybit as good as Stevie!

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Well...that must be because you are some newbie around here;)
And it is far from my problem if you or others respect my point of view or not!
I dig the old sound, never ever liked EMGs, had a few of those and have borrowed a few strats with all the shebang installed....never helped on the lack of nice tone to me....
There are few actives that has something to offer that I would use for much.
All the nine years I have been here;)
Lol

OK we now know what Nine refers to. Glad you've contributed this long, but it doesn't guarantee what you say is gospel.

I'd respect you alot more if I knew more about you, and incidentally I'd like to because I mostly enjoy your comments. However, I'd prefer you qualified comments early on, and that you didn't just write off something because it didn't do it for your audio perception.

I'm open minded and like different things for different sounds.

However, I will admit your comments would hold more 'influence' if I knew you were either an audio genius or experienced sage, whilst at the moment I'm in the dark.

I'm open to a private correspondence if you don't want to reveal yourself publicly. I really am here to make good acquaintances and know the people on here.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

I saw Vaughn this year at bluesfest, he opened for Bob Dylan. I was never familiar with his work before that show. I will say this : The man can play, and play very well.

Rid's been pretty open about his 'day gig'... designing building FX stompers at Carl Martin...

:27:

As Jimi might say, "Are you experienced?"

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Ah about 72 I think it was...got the vid somewhere!
Great stuff there!
Hmm I think I remember something now!
He gave the neck to his brother, who still has it!
It had all kinds of Fender necks and at a point also a Charvel maple neck, now it has some newer RI 57 neck??

I believe (at Live 8 at least) that the maple neck is the same one from the Red EMG Strat. (So 57 RI... )

I think it's funny how much attention is given to that Strat with the EMGs. It was a completely utilitarian creation, when he was touring in the early 80's he didn't want to take his vintage axes on tour, so he bought new American Strats to tour with. At that time the 57 RI was basically what became the American Standard and American Series in the Fender line. (Not like the painstaking reissues of the past 10 years or so) He just needed some reliable, decent quality guitars to play on the road. Also, the EMGs came out of necessity to reduce noise and drive the massive effects rack he was building up. I'd bet that most of the tracks on DB and MLoR were his vintage Strats. Now that he's touring smaller venues and a much smaller signal path, a vintage Strat pickup is fine.

Now, regarding the Fender Artist Signature guitar, of all sig guitars out there, it's obviously this one that I'd be interested in, but I won't get it obviously. One of the great things about Strats is that you CAN build your perfect guitar...

OK- truthfully, that's the first real opinion I've heard regarding his playing, so maybe I'll check him out.

I'll get cr*p for this, but I've seen concerts with John Mayer playing - most notably the Eric Clapton Crossroads concert- and he's underrated as a player, maybe because his songs and target audience don't allow him to play and show his potential

In Mayers case... it's more like the label & management wanting him to be a 'singer/songwriter' type then a "guitar player" because they figure they can SELL that easily. They want/wanted him to keep writing tunes like "Daughters" and "Wonderland"...

Check out his trio album...

I also have Jimmie Vaughns "Out There" record & dig it... but I like ALL kinds of music.

Mostly the "good" kind.

Well thanks for that! Information helps. Know where to go now to ask stomp Q's.:bigok:

Me - Muso 29 yrs. Highly trained in AV on the tech side. Worked in Sound studios, and AV houses in the Broadcast/film industry. Specialised in the camera side, but use my audio knowledge all the time.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Well, looks like the MSRP will be around $4000, how much is that on the street? Regardless, too musch for me to spend on a Strat... (I wonder what pickups they will use on it?)

EDIT - MSRP on the Johnson is $2499 and MF is $1749. Is this really going to be a $3000 guitar?!?

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

I'd wager DG went with EMG pups for the MLR and DB tours because of all the EM on the stage. And you can say what you want but when you have Dave Gilmour playing the guitar and Pete Cornish maintaining the rig and building custom FX racks it's gonna sound good.

As for the guitar...just take a Strat and chop the bar a few inches...then spend time learning the songs with a clean tube amp, electric mistress, a decent delay and a few choice stompers for distortion. Oh yeah...turn it up really loud. Close enough for R-N-R.

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

BBC 1 showed Gilmour from the Albert Hall last night, and no way did that EMG strat sound sterile. Gorgeous cleans.

That's exactly why I heard he went with the EMG's.

I hear Callaham makes shorter trem arms like Gilmour's- you have to buy one of their blocks for it to work, which is a big improvement over trem blocks anyway.

I love his tone on Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder.

if that is the new live Albert Hall that is coming out on DVD in North America i would figure his black strat has Duncans.... does he also use the old Red Strats with the EMG's on that video? I've never seen it....

That David Gilmour dvd and a new Bio Movie on the Who called Amazing Journey are being shown at the Toronto Film Festival next weekend

Re: Gilmour Tribute Strat

Has anybody ever done a 'sterile' scientific frequency response comparison of various manufacturers Active Vs. Passive pickups?
