giovanni/iron gear/guitarheads pickups

Re: giovanni/iron gear/guitarheads pickups

What is you amp(s) your running or what is your set up?

i have different set of amps: some little like fender mustang 1, roland cube 30, bigger like H&k matrix 100 head.but i play mostly on classic 30 et more often an old laney TF200 (i love his tone).

If you want a more alnico flavor, you can order an alnico 8 magnet for less than 3.61€ from Addiction-FX on eBay

do you have a link. (and i'm french i bet the duty taxes would be too expensive to buy the pickup in US)

for the moment i think about the pearly gates in bridge (but closer to the strings)

a SD alternative 8

a SD custom 5 (but if i found a good bargain)

A C5 is actually going in the opposite direction of what your looking for. The mids are scooped in comparison to any of the other Custom series pickups.

Non of this matters if you don't have the right hand that does the job.

Re: giovanni/iron gear/guitarheads pickups

catshwisker alnico 8 humbucker does a pretty good black album tone and is £45.

For reload I've found nothing really beat the emg85 or 81.

If you check the irongear website theres a clip on there that i submitted years ago. With a marshall TSL i think it may have been with the hammerhead doing justice.

I've tried a fair few Irongears and they aren't really worth it imho. If you are on a budget I highly recommend Entwistle pickups they have a fantastic range including neodymium and hybrid magnet design pickups and theyre cheaper than irongear and sound far better. They punch far above their price range and the HDN pushed an aftermath set out of one of my guitars.

Re: giovanni/iron gear/guitarheads pickups

I've been lucky with Giovanni - which Artec said is their Custom Shop line - particularly with GVT-1. If you're willing for pickups adventure then go for pickups you mentioned, Tonerider or Axesrus (it has plenty to offer too and I've been lucky with the Show Stopper). That said, if you want more consistency, grab Duncans. It's less shot-in-the-dark.

Re: giovanni/iron gear/guitarheads pickups

I've had a good experience with the irongears. I put some in an Ibanez and they work very well. Their Dirty Torque does a pretty good pastiche of a JB, its just almost there. Their Blues Engine is pretty good too, its what I imagine a '59 A4 would sound like, smooth, fat, and balanced. But if its within your budget I'd say better just get Duncans.

Re: giovanni/iron gear/guitarheads pickups

I have a good experience with Giovanni. For few years I have used GCH-2 set in Kramer Assault and decided to try something else. I tried GCH-1, then Tonerider Generator, Tesla Plasma-3 and... returned to GCH-2. Why?
GCH-1 souds similar to GCH-2, but weaker.
Tonerider Generator and Generator neck + Octane (Alnico 8!) bridge are good for heavy rock, but the cleans are not as good as from GCH-2, and there was something missing in the sound of highest notes (Assault is a 24-fret guitar, plus bending...)
Tesla Plasma has a little boring cleans, while overdrive was powerful, but smooth. Too polite...
GCH-2 has the best cleans and with high gain gives almost as much power as Tonerider. They also sound good when split.
So, Giovanni GCH-2 is the best choice so far.

For the record, Kramer Assault has mahogany body and neck with ebony fretboard. Probably the ebony makes the sound so specific. For example a pickup that sounds warm in Explorer (rosewood fretboard), does not sound that warm in Assault.
