Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Hey.

As some may know, I have had a problem with getting the sound that I REALLY like out of my ENGL.

I have written a list of bands I like the sound of:

80's Motley/Mick Mars - Marshall?
Pretty Maids - Marshall.
Quiet Riot - Marshall.
Warrant - ?
Europe - ?
D-A-D - Marshall.
Black Sabbath - Laney.
Van Halen - Marshall.
Scorpions - Marshall.
Yngwie Malmsteen - Marshall.
Judas Priest - Marshall?
Iron Maiden - Marshall.

I think that gives a pretty clear cut answer, that I need a old Marshall not this modern stuff.

I dislike the JCM2000/900 45xx series, but think of a amp that screams 80s metal, would that be a JCM 800 2203/2204?

Here are a few clips to give you a idea of my sound ideal:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=WAaeD4CFzK4 - Espec. this sound is alot like my ideal, raw but not brutal, nice EQ.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XmzhO6WwNgc (Chorus).

What amp would you say I am defining from the clips and bands?

Just for record, I dont want to totally copy someones sound, but those are what I am seeking to get to.

Thanks alot.

Cheers.

you will need to get an attenuator with the 800, as you need to have it LOUDDDDDD to get the sound out of it.

but if you want the studio sound, dont even bother as that's quadruple tracked, to give it more ooomph.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I know thats a studio sound, but it should be doable to get close to it? Especially the Pretty Maids sound?

I dont mind using a attenuator, but just so you know, I use my ENGL in the bedroom with the MV on 6.5 through a 4x12 :D

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

listened to the clips... you would come close with it (what engl do you have), how close depends on you though.

as for the amp being at 6.5, i do hope you are using some sort of hearing protection, cos, however fun it is today, you'll start losing your hearing after a while, if it's excessive use of loud volume.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I use earplugs sometimes, but i use the volume control on the guitar too.

I have a Screamer, which is way to compressed and modern for my taste.

Which amp are you talking about for this?

I also added a artist more to the list.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

talking about a marshall jcm800 (preferably slightly moded), and the early jcm900's, along with laney GH50 and 100 amps, many of those bands in the 80's also used Laney AOR amps (gainier jcm 800's, with a more pissed off, growly botom end)..
if you want to shell out more cash, Splawn is an option, as well as the MatAmp GT (but those might be well out of your price range)

if i was you, i'd stay the hell away from the marshall 2000 series.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

my first choice for you would be a Splawn, 2nd choice would be getting an Old JCM800 and sticking a pedal infront of it and cranking the hell out of and using a hotplate to bring it down again.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

Try get a Splawn over here;)
If I where you Alex, I would sell that Engl with as little loss as possible and get a
Marshall or Hiwatt, maybe even some old vintage Laney or Carlsbro heads.

I was excactly thinking of a 2203 or 2204.

I basically would like 4-6 amps to look for from HiWatt, Marshall, Laney and other old brands which will come close to that type of sound.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

How does Ken from Pretty Maids EQ him self on the favorite clips? Doesent he boost his mids?

And check your pm :)

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

A shame it didn't work out for you as you hoped. I'm also looking for some new amp stuff, LOL.

If I turn these beasts up I might actually be deaf in 5 minutes :laugh2:

We could trade :D

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I guess it is a possibility. Does it have a clean channel? How many watts is it? (so it can be attenuated enough with an attenuator, lol)

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

50watt 4 channel, 1 clean, crunch, soft lead, heavy lead.

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

That certainly sounds interesting, I don't really know much about Engl, other than it has a reputation for being quality ;)

Re: Giving up on the ENGL, need new amp.

I am thinking jcm800 2204 - the single channel 50 watter.

I had the 2203 and loved it - it was very loud for the pushed sound you hear on those albums.

I figure with a 2x12 cab the 50 watter would work well for ya.
