Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

Ok, ok, so I'm looking for a neck humbucker that's bright, kinda jangly, clear for good blues and jazz riffs, and not too bassy. I like the way the '59 sounds on the site, but from what I read, it's fairly boomy, moreso than other pups. The jazz is almost too woody sounding and doesn't break up like the '59 recording. I'd also like something that doesn't screech :laugh2: or have a really peircing bite. Glassy! Anybody suggest something else, or is the '59 it? Hah, ok, I'm done. Thanks

Let me get this right...
the 59 is to boomy
the Jazz is to woody
and you want glassy but NOT screeching or peircing

IMO you just asked for an Alnico II Pro...these are wonderful, sweet PAF typ pickups with an almost Strat like top end...I love them and am kinda surpirsed that more people do not use them.

Hah, well, I dunno. What I mean is that I hear people say that the 59 is bassy, it sounds great to me on the site, I'm just wondering if it sounds different to everyone else :D I'll check that out. How does the A2P split?

The 59 CAN be a tad bassy but no more than a normal Alnico 5 humbucker IMO...as for the A2P split tones I have no idea...I rarely ever split my buckers, sorry

Re: Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

Haha, ok. Well, I've been listening to the A2P, and I have to say, it sounds really stinking good. I forgot to mention, touch sensitivity is key. I don't think I can really get what I'm looking for in an alnico 5 pup. I'll try to find posts on the A2P. Anybody else?

Re: Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

i think youl be wanting a duckbucker. jangly, glassy, not too bassy, not booming, not screeching. pity they dont make em in full size humbuckers eh :P

Re: Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

Did you try rolling back the tone with the Jazz? I've found that it sounds perfect with the tone knob at around 3. Then I roll it back to 10 if I want stratty tones or if I'm playing chords (clean or dirty).

Nope, never actually played a Jazz. I still think it's a little bassy. I'm thinkin it's gonna be some kind of alnico 2 pup for me, so much lighter with more shimmer and sensitivity. But, dunno.

Hmmmm, from what I hear on the demos, the Seths are a bit more touch sensitive and smooth than the AP2s. I'm curious, can anybody tell me what a Seth splits like?

Re: Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

Seths, APII, or Pearly Gates neck. I actually like Alnico 5 pickups more, only because they're clearer sounding and less murky in the lows and mids, but that's just my taste.

DiMarzio Humbucker From Hell is exactly what you're describing. FWIW.

The Mag might get you there too.

Re: Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

I can't think of any Duncan neck humbuckers that sound the way you're describing. But one of the brightest, clearest and most articulate neck humbuckers I've ever used is the Fralin 7.5K HB. It's a great neck humbucker and the one I always recommend for guys who want a neck paf type humbucker that approaches the tone and clarity of a Strat neck pickup but has the output and ballsy tone of a vintage paf. I like the Duncan Seth Lover, Antiquity and PG for my neck humbuckers these days and appreciate the warmer tone of the Duncans...but for the clear bright ballsy tone you're talking about I think the 7.5K Fralin alnico 4 neck humbucker would do the trick for you. I miss having a set of Fralin HB's in a guitar...they were my favorite humbuckers for a long time. Lew

Yeah, I forgot about the Fralin neck. I had a set of 8.5 and 7.5 Fralins in my #1 LP, the Goldtop, and the neck was killer. In retrospect, I could have gone to a 9.5 bridge, but sold the set because I thought the bridge was too glassy and trebly. I should have just gotten a hotter bridge by them. I settled on C-5/59 in that guitar, while my slightly warmer LP tones come from the CC/Seth

That's my favorite Fralin HB set: 7.5K and 9.5K. Lew

Re: Glassy, Clear PAF Neck Hum?

I'm a big proponent of the jazz like MRID. It is articulate and very versatile when you use your tone knob. I leave mine set on about 5 and it's great. My bass player once said (I know you guys are tired of hearing this) "that is what a neck humbucker is supposed to sound like". I haven't tried an A2P in the neck only in the bridge and in conjunction with the jazz.
