Glorious Day! Jazz/59N Hybrid Perfect/Buzz Gone!

Resoldered the black wire to plate ground after grinding a nice clean area,re-potted the pickup and the cover,new cts volume pot,nice shiny grounds throughout...Noise is gone completely and the pickup sounds really great!

Went back to the A4 magnet and my Hybrid measures 7.6K....I do believe I can say I'm done with this guitar now or at least for a long while anyway! :laugh2:

It had to be the plate ground after changing the bobbin out on the 59 and swapping for the Jazz bobbin because I didn't have any problem whatsoever with the 59N before the swap.When you move those bobbins around,it's really easy to disturb that little black ground plate wire,though this is the first time I've run into a problem!..
In fact I had done all the work on top of the guitar with a towel underneath and just swapped bobbins etc and never touched the cavity wiring at all...

Since I had the pickup completely out of the guitar today,figured I,d repot the pickup and the cover and go with a new volume pot and all new nice small puddles of solder...Anyway.....It's fixed and I'm so very good with it...:laugh2:

lucky bugger..... maybe i should use my iron and heat up the solder conections to my noisey 59's..... pot and ad covers too...

Sure couldn't hurt! I never have problems soldering and getting nice clean shiny connections so I'm choking it up to a poor ground plate connection on the pickup itself and not the cavity wiring...The cavity wiring was fine before the swap and un-touched also..

Live and learn again!

That's great John! I knew that it would all work out. You know I was starting to feel guilty about my pup working better than the twin. Starting to think that I should send mine back to you for all of the work done. LOL, I don't feel so bad now!

Can i get to this ground plate connect without taking the PU apart?

You have to pull the tape from around the bobbins and remove 1 bobbin as that little wire is almost under 1 bobbin,but it's actually just in front of the end of the bobbin...I think it's the slug coil side? It's a little black wire soldered to the baseplate of the pickup inside the pickup...

If you haven't messed with the pickup or the bobbins,recheck your grounds and your wiring to your pots.

That's great John! I knew that it would all work out. You know I was starting to feel guilty about my pup working better than the twin. Starting to think that I should send mine back to you for all of the work done. LOL, I don't feel so bad now!

I worked yesterday and it gave me time to ponder on what was happening...Today I came home and did all the things mentioned above and it 100% fixed the entire issue I had...:beerchug:

The problem started after the bobbin swap and it had to be that plate ground that I May have disrupted and pulled it out of a good ground connection...

I Only put a new pot in the guitar and resoldered everything within the cavity because I had the pickup out of the guitar....

Everytime I play this guitar now I'll think of you Ryan! My Hybrid brother! LOL.....

I do still prefer the A4 magnet in my guitar....The A5 still is a bit boomy ,but the A4 is perfect!

So what does the Jazz /'59 hybrid sound like with the a4? Could you compare it to the stock '59 or the Jazz?

Seems like the A4 Jazz/59 N has a bit more output and maybe just slightly more mids?(Maybe the higher mids are more prominent)? Fairly jangly top end,nice lows and the lows aren't woofy..The middle position tones paired with the 59B/Custom A2 in the bridge are great also..

More harmonic content...This is what makes the Hybrid pickups great and the harmonics help fill the overall sound out more...The pickup is very articulate(Another strong trait of the hybrid)...

Reminds me of what I Loved about the A4 59N but with more jangle on top,it's more articulate,and still reminds me of a 59N but with the A4 magnet I Like it best...The A4 allows me to bring the neck pickup closer to the strings a bit and I don't get that overpowering lowend that I always get with the A5 magnet....I have to lower the pickup another 1/32" with the A5 and the A4 works out alot better....If I need a bit more clarity,I can still drop the pickup down a bit with the A4 without the pickup being almost below the plastic ring..

Yes I do have a PG+ and it's boxed up for another later project...I tryed it in one of my strats and I thought it was too toppy in a bad way like a Screamin Demon....It really needs an A2 magnet so it could be a stock PG pickup actually...The A4 and 5 are pretty close in the overall feel,tightness,etc..but the A4 acts like an aged A5 in that it tames the lows and boomy stuff,but it feels just as tight...

Now you just need to follow my other recommendation of using a Phat Cat in the Bridge position of a Strat with APII Neck & Middle pickups... that's the OTHER secret weapon of great tone!

Pete....Is this a fullsized humbucker? All of my strats are s/s/s and have either a Twangbanger or a Texas Hot or Fralin SP43 in the bridge and either Texas Hot,Surfer,or APS2s in the neck and middle....I also like Fender Fat 50s and have 2 of those in a strat of mine also.

1 strat has a Scremon Demon in the bridge though with APS2/APS2...The SD is ok though....Just ok really..
