Glossy necks

JB_From_Hell

Jomo's Nimions
I was talking to a buddy today, whom I had traded guitars with in the past. It was an Ibanez that I had steel-wooled to a satin feel (gloss finishes-poly or nitro-stick to me like glue). He said that he ended up not liking the feel, and that he'd swapped the neck with another he had that still had all the poly intact because he needed them to be "all glossy and slick".

Does anybody else prefer a gloss finish?

Re: Glossy necks

I don't mind the glossy poly necks - but the gibson V neck I had years ago would always feel sticky and get gummed up. I guess that was nitro. My warmoth gloss neck never feels sticky.

Re: Glossy necks

the neck on my Schecter is pretty glossy...but it's still pretty smooth...not sticky...i do prefer necks that are lightly finished though!

I usually prefer satin necks, but I've met a few gloss necks that I can get along with. I don't understand why he swapped the necks instead of just giving that one a good sheen back, but I guess some folks are more players than doers.

I've got two guitars right now that have "necks". The Sekova is all glossy, and I guess I just got used to it since it was my only guitar for about 3 years. The Seagull has a gloss neck and I much prefer it. The Taylor had somewhat of a semi-gloss neck, and that was great. I would compare it to a well used neck on a Gibson faded series. Started off as a gloss, with no grain filler on the mahogany, so it sunk in giving it a satin feel.

Re: Glossy necks

I actually prefer gloss necks, if they're clean and my hands are as well. But seeing as how that isn't too hard to accomplish... yup, I like gloss necks.

Re: Glossy necks

I don't mind gloss as long as it doesn't make my fingers stick. If my hands are sweaty, my hand sticks to my Ibanez a little, but my hand doesn't stick to my LTD's at all.

In fact, they are the only brand to improve my skills.

Re: Glossy necks

Gloss that doesn't stick (my Epiphone) is good for me. Gloss that does (my '52 RI Tele) sucks. However, the Tru Oil finish on Mike's (XSSIVE) Clone guitars is by far the best. Awesomely smooth and fast to play on.

A lot of folks have this problem with newer Fender nitro finishes. My only guess is while they're "Thin Skin" compared to modern poly finishes, they're quite thick by vintage standards. Due to the fact that it's a thicker nitro finish, it will take longer to cure, but that's bad for production so they're sent out the door while they're hard, but still curing.

This is only my opinion and does not state any known fact.

Re: Glossy necks

I prefer satin necks, Nitro bothers me due to its stickyness. My favourite are raw/oiled necks. I have a bunch of them.

Re: Glossy necks

Let me modify the question a little....

Does anybody think any sort of glossy finished neck feels slicker than a Charvel-style raw/oiled neck?

Re: Glossy necks

Many consider the satin neck on the Epi Ultras a good thing. Of course after a few months of playing the neck on mine is pretty slick but still seems much faster than the poly neck of my Dot. I'll see how it does when the weather gets warmer. How many times can I do the 0000 steel wool thing before I see bare wood?:scratchch

I do.

A lot :)

I used some grade 3 coarse steel wool on my HM Strat to get through a lot of the poly, then used 0000 to get it all slick and smooth, and there's still plenty of finish left. Using only the 0000, I find it unlikely that you'd ever get all the way through.

Re: Glossy necks

Funny, I never noticed.

I just realized my PRS has a glossy neck, but I really have never noticed it.

I have clean and dry hands though --- and I don't sweat, nearly at all.

Official answer: no preference!

Re: Glossy necks

I can't do glossy. I have, what my friends call ''Acid Hands'', which means my hands stick or destroy any type of string or finish. This makes my quest for the perfect guitar neck very difficult.

Big part of the reason I got my main axe was the neck finish. Very, very thin nitro, over maple. Super smooth, one of the first that really works for me. Because of my acid hands though, I am already starting to wear through it, after 1 year of playing the guitar.
