I have clean and dry hands though --- and I don't sweat, nearly at all.

I can't do glossy. I have, what my friends call ''Acid Hands'', which means my hands stick or destroy any type of string or finish. This makes my quest for the perfect guitar neck very difficult.

I have probably the least acidic & sweaty hands of anybody I've ever met. I never wipe my guitar necks or strings after playing, and they last forever.

I wonder what makes me stick to the finish. The worst spot is actually the underside of my right forearm rubbing on the body and feeling almost raw after awhile. For this reason, I steel-wooled the body of my Peavey strat, but I'm hesitant to go doing this to every guitar I get.

I used some grade 3 coarse steel wool on my HM Strat to get through a lot of the poly, then used 0000 to get it all slick and smooth, and there's still plenty of finish left. Using only the 0000, I find it unlikely that you'd ever get all the way through.

Thanks, I might try taking some gloss off my Dot neck and would not worry too much about going through all the poly but I don't know how thick or durable the paint or whatever it is on the Ultra is. Any ideas?

Thanks, I might try taking some gloss off my Dot neck and would not worry too much about going through all the poly but I don't know how thick or durable the paint or whatever it is on the Ultra is. Any ideas?

I've never left one with just paint, but have always either satin'd up the poly, or taken them down to bare wood.

I would worry more about just getting it to where it feels comfortable.

The neck on my Jackson SL3 is glossy and it's easily the best neck I've ever played. I wish all mine were like that. It's WAY more glossy than either the RR3 or KE3 necks I have.

After I played my first satin-necked guitar, I saw the light. I have only one guitar at the moment with a glossy neck (my Tele) and it's due to be sanded down pretty soon.
