glueing on nut?

i was fixing up a screw on my guitar today that fell out and as i was getting ready to put the strings back on i decided to take off the truss rod cover and take a look-sie, just out of curiosity. as i did so, the nut fell right off , i tried holding it down and screwing the truss rod cover back on, hoping this would hold it down, but it definetely didn't help at all. i had this nut glued on about a year ago, did someone just do a bad job or is this somehow my fault? and the most important question is, what should i do? is there some type of glue i can get that i can easily glue the nut back on with and solve the problem quickly? or is it more complicated then that? thanks guys

I've always used a small amount of superglue to attach the nut. If you use too much, it'll be difficult to remove if you ever need to replace it. Chances are, whoever glued it used white glue, which doesn't hold very well in my opinion.

I used too much superglue once, and when I tried to take the nut out later some of the wood came with it. On the plus side, it made a nice indentation that the nut fit in so I don't have to glue it anymore.

you can glue it with just a drop of wood glue or white glue
believe it or not, i use a thin layer of carpet tape - it holds the nut tight, but still lets it be removed if necessary without leaving a pot hole behind

If the nut holds snug in place, you may not need to glue the nut. Other than that, two small drops of watered down white glue will work fine. That it comes off easily is to your advantage if you have to replace it.
