Godin SD

One of my regular local trading buddies has a Godin SD. It's the model with a locking trem.

Anybody have an opinion about them?

Re: Godin SD

Godins are a fantastic guitar and very much over-looked. Fantastic quality and playability. The SD's are more of an entry level Godin, but still very very good guitars, you may want to change out the pups. They have a rock maple neck and maple bodies.

Re: Godin SD

I have an SdXt. It's basicly the same, exept its H-S-H. Mine now has a S-S-S configuration. It came stock with a vintage style 2 point trem, with a routed cavity to have it floating.

I love the guitar. Have had it for about 7-8 years now, and it is a monster. I don't bring it out much, as it has sentimental value (long story), but anyways, it is a wicked guitar that I love to play.

For the cash, godin delivers a hell of a product.

Re: Godin SD

I think I'm gonna trade. I've wanted to try a Godin for a long time, but they rarely pop up in the local used market.

Re: Godin SD

I've got three Godins and they would be the last guitars I get rid of. I don't think you'll be disappointed

Re: Godin SD

I can't comment on the Godin SD specifically, but I do have a Godin Freeway Classic that I really dig. It's an HSH guitar with a standard/vintage style trem, and a nice comfortable neck joint for playing up high. Check the photo in my avatar. My only gripe is that the bridge pickup route/location puts the slug & screw coils slightly out of alignment with the strings. I've got a Jazz Bridge/Vintage Rails-middle/Jazz Neck setup on this with a push/pull to split the coils and it gets some cool tones.

Godin make really nice instruments - I've played a whole bunch of them including the flat five, A6, freeway classic, lg, lgxt, 5th avenue, radiator, as well as one of the 4 string freeway basses and they're all really nicely made instruments. If you can trade for a Godin guitar, go for it - you won't regret it.

Re: Godin SD

Thanks for all the input. As I said before, Godins never pop up around here, so if I pass on this one, I'm sure I'll end up regretting it.

Are the stock pickups at least usable? It's going to be awhile before I could afford to upgrade.

Oh for sure, lots of guys never change them, I've just found that some of the stock Godin pickups can be a little vanillla. The old Tetrads they came with were pretty sweet and oh course some of the Older LG's and the newer LG Signatures and LGX series came with Duncans.

Re: Godin SD

i like Godins... that SD model with the locking trem is interesting... it will be a nice axe if it's a cheap deal... Godin uses quality woods... a lot of the SD line is Mostly Maple core bodies with a little poplar on the wings and a nice maple top...

Re: Godin SD

I love my LG and always have my eye open for a deal on an SD. If you dont like it maybe we can work a trade ;)

Re: Godin SD

Hey JB :

Good question :

I have an SdXt. It's basicly the same, exept its H-S-H. Mine now has a S-S-S configuration. It came stock with a vintage style 2 point trem, with a routed cavity to have it floating.

C'mon give what's the story man heh heh ?

I've got three Godins and they would be the last guitars I get rid of. I don't think you'll be disappointed

I have only one LGXSA and it's a dream . I would get another one like a LGXT with the whammy . The only reason I would get one is the whammy , aside from that I am totally pleased and content to just have my present LGXSA .

I also want to get me a nylon solid body Godin Spanish classical type . These models with the synthesizer access are the guitar of yesterday , today and tomorrow in many ways if you think about having a electric that could do it all from CW like Vince Gill to Roy Clark , to classic Rock like Santana or Jimmy Page , Rock-A-Billy from Elvis , Carl Perkins to Chan Romero , Jazz like Wes Montgomery , Pat Metheny , George Benson , Blues like B . B . King , Warren Hayes , Eric Clapton , Duane Allman or Billy Gibbons . And many more than I can think of .

And this was only the electric and acoustic electric side of this beast .

I have the cognac quilted ( sexy thing ) model , whew where do I start from here ?

Heavy I mean heavy with it's solid mahogany ergo dynamic body shape , it had better be ergo , heavy as it is !

Mahogany neck is fast good string action set up from the factory . Ebony fretboard is claimed to improve synthesizer tracking .

I have to think their right because this beauty tracks really smoothly and fast , no real noticeable latency , even on bass signals .

The soundscape of today is as dramatic as it ever was only more new things to add to the palette of sound colors and textures . The world hears everything good or bad , it's all there in it's beautiful glory and hideous ugliness to hear and now to see in music videos .

As far as what we as an individuals think is a well made and acceptable sounding musical instruments or not goes , in this case it's guitars and Godin was the topic ..........

Wow look at all this positive feed back ( cool brother Godiners , I hear ya ) that's been written so far by all the happy Godin players including me .

That is my personal take on why I choose a guitar like my LGXSA :

I wanted a guitar of today's worlds sounds and yesterdays as well and maybe tomorrows sounds if I'm n lucky to figure out some side by side for my beckon call in one guitar on stage now with out a huge wall of **** to set up , in a way it's a very powerful time machine .

As Duke Ellington said of music :

" Music is neither old or new "

Every decade of time has it's moments of musical greatness , I like to explore those kinds of musical horizons from yesterday , today and tomorrow .

My choice in this guitar ( my LGXSA ) helps to make sure that this type of fulfillment in my music playing to have a break even chance of success all things being equal .

My set up :

LGXSA>

to Roland GR33 to >

GNX4DAW>

two 60 watt guitar amps & DI out of DAW >

my PA >

500 watt stereo power amp >

Amp >

Speaker cabinets x4

Neat clean , small foot print on stage for solo shows with out a mixer cause my DAW has a XLR mic input and gets all the benefits off the DAW's FX engine I need for my vocal .

When I play with a band I only use my guitar ampX2 and plug into what ever P . A . that's there for the sound re enforcement .

A LGXSA when hooked to a guitar synthesizer module gives you the power of a keyboard synthesizer musician so you become a double threat and if you can sing your a triple threat :)

There ya go JB

Re: Godin SD

I just got the Godin. You guys were right.... it's very nice.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out the bridge is a Schaller Floyd. After about 20 minutes of playing it, I'm in no hurry to replace the pickups, either. The single coils sound nice and thick with a high gain, and the bridge pickup is the best stock non-Duncan/DiMarzio/EMG I've ever heard. No mud, plenty of crunch, but still very full.

In short, I'm very happy. Thanks for helping to tip me in favor of trading :)

Glad to hear you are happy! I agree with you on the pickups btw. If it wasn't for the fact that I wanted all single coils, the pickups would still be stock in mine.
