DD set by far.

If you have to go with EMG's I guess the 85/60 would be you best bet IMO. I am still not crazy about EMG's.

Re: Going metal ! Which pup combo to shoot for ?

ive had such good results with my custom...

but for actives i would listen to DSS

Re: Going metal ! Which pup combo to shoot for ?

I voted the EMG 81/60 combo, because I have that set in my Ibanez SZ520. I find the 81 really cuts, and has a lot of articulation and a great percussive sound to its attack, but sometimes the leads sound a bit thin. My guess is that's just my SS Randall's distortion; I'll really have a good test of it when I get my cab and can use my Peavey Triple XXX. The 60 in the neck is great for clean and has a nice lead sound too. Mixing the two pickups with the 81 on full and the 60 at just below half I get some nice thick rhythm and lead tones.

I've never tried the 85 so I can't comment, but I trust what everyone says about it being thicker and warmer, and having a better lead tone. I'll have to try it one day. Until then, like I said my vote goes to the EMG 81/60 set.

Re: Going metal ! Which pup combo to shoot for ?

I voted EMG 81/60.

I like the extra edge & power of the 81 best. I love the 60 in the neck because it doesn't have any muddiness in the neck which I hate. Think of a nice clear bridge pup tone but in the neck, that's the 60. Wire them up to
18volts and you're ready to do all that is metal.

Re: Going metal ! Which pup combo to shoot for ?

for passive, i dig the custom/jazz combo. nothing you can't do with it.

actives would be 85 in the bridge and 60 or 89 in the neck. like many have mentioned, the sa sounds killer in the neck!

I love the 81-81 combo, I just love brutally abrasive distortion (think Chimaira) and it delivers...and the 81 in the neck is just a bit creamier which is perfect for me since I can't stand normal "neck" pickups.

For a LP I wouldn't put an 85 in the neck though, it'd be too bassy imo.

Man i gotta agree here, having a 81 in the neck is GREAT, that way you get 2 different EQ's of the same sound with a flick of a switch. I love dual 81's......in the right guitar. as in an all mahogany guitar.

lol, I love the dual 81s in the old ESP M1000s, those are all-maple neck-through guitars w/rosewood fretboard and a floyd, doesn't get much brighter than that.

i really dig the DD!!.Maybe not in the neck still i don't tried it in the neck position ,but this is the ultimate Bridge PU!!!.Does everything fine ,clean ,transparent ,articulate ,hot ,screaming and singing.Reacts very well with tone/volume knobs.I love it's harmonics and teh bottom ,wich makes it tight enough.i can really do almost everything with it.

lol that has to be harsh as fuk :laugh2:

Probably sounds alot like an eclipse which i cannot STAND so thin and harsh. Although through a nice smooth bassy amp it may sound really good :smokin:
