Going to try out a JB in the neck position...any thoughts?

Other than the obvious......don't do it....it wasn't meant for the neck position...it will sound like hell....thoughts??

I wouldn't have thought of trying this...but I think I remember some talk on the board before about some being pleased with the result.

I'm going to try this in one of my Charvels...alder body...maple/ebony board neck...floyd rose.

My favorite bridge pickup is the Custom 5...so that will be in the bridge....and I'm just trying the JB in the neck because I don't have anything else on hand at the moment. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised & really like it there & keep it. Maybe not.

Anyone else try this before? Let me know what to expect.

Lots of people like it. I think it's because the JB has a really good split tone.

won't have enough high end IMO JB already sounds pretty heavy in the bridge compared to most duncans

Looking at the specs of the JB, with tone at b/m/t at 5/6/8, you're going to have a medium-strong tone with highs that get compressed and smothered. The DC of 16.4, with a treble only 2 points above the 6 middle, in neck position, means the high frequencies are going to be there in the mix, but perhaps forget about the high harmonics being evident. Words like "buttery" spring to mind. The musical equivalent of watching maple syrup slowly run down a pancake.

If you go for it, I'd suggest putting in 500K pots and don't be surprised if you're going over the amp all the time to turn up the treble.

But there are many others here with much more expertise.

Aha....I did a search & found a few good discussions on this topic (I don't know why I couldn't find them last night).

Maybe I will try this out...can't hurt to try....but I think I will ultimately end up with the old standby 59 in the neck...or maybe I will try out the Dimarzio Air Norton (easy to get in double creme!)

You could try the JB in the neck in parallel mode which would help clarity and brightness. Otherwise you could try arties de-mud mod and put a small capacitor on the hot lead in series.

I'd say wait for Zerberus to chime in or PM him. He uses a JB in the neck and is quite satisfied with it.

Do what???????? How many Duncans have you sat down and had ALOT of expereince with???

The JB has PLENT of upper mids and treble to cut through in the neck position and the JB is not one of Duncans Heaviest pickups. Dont get me wrong, it can cover that kind of ground but, it is more in the middle of the road when comparing heaviness.

OK I was just being nice before. DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:smack:

There a quite a few people that have done it and it actually comes factory in a guitar or 2. My Jackson SL-4 came factory with a JB in the bridge and a JB in the neck. Personally, I like the JB in the neck better than in the bridge. I like it with the slug poles twords the neck but, Zerb likes his with the Screw poles twords the neck.

I am getting tired of short timers and pointless advice!

If you like horseradish on your hot dog fine! It isn't right nor wrong just a preference. You will find that with pickups there are a lot of odd combinations that somehow work? Give it a shot!

+1 on wait for Zerb. He is the JB/neck opinion you want to hear.

Have a JB in the neck pos. of my Jackson Rhoads.Came stock sounds great very bright, articulate.Like it better then the one in the bridge which I swapped for a Custom.

:laugh2:

I had the exact same experience with my Jackson SL-4. Sounded great in the neck but, sucked in the bridge.

Keep this thread going ;)

I have a nickel covered JB just waiting to go in the neck slot of a Les Paul. Still would like to hear from a few others before I fire up the soldering iron.

Re: Going to try out a JB in the neck position...any thoughts?

Are those neck JB's also ~16K DC?

Re: Going to try out a JB in the neck position...any thoughts?

I have a JB/59 hybrid in neck its ok not very very good but ok tight bass response!

Re: Going to try out a JB in the neck position...any thoughts?

I wouldn't do it. You can, however, get a neck-wound (custom shop) JB for the neck, if I remember correctly. But JB's come for bridge normally, so you'd have way too much output.

It's tought to beat a '59 in the neck. I have one in a Hamer, and it is SO tonalicious!
