It is real gold. Just so thin that it's not worth much, just enough to double the price of the cover.
The base material of the cover varies, sometimes bronze, sometimes what they call "nickel-silver" which typically has neither nickel or silver in it.
The thickness of the cover matters a lot too, the thinner the better tonewise.
