Re: Gold Top Les Paul

What would the Reverend Willy G use? :scratchch

I have just bought a 2006 Standard P90 limited edition Goldtop. Strangely, the neck PU, with the tone rolled right off, through fairly high gain does a pretty good Billy Gibbons tone. Stranger still, it does a pretty convincing Robert Fripp tone. He uses an all-mahogany Custom with humbuckers through a Big Muff pedal.

Roll the tone pot right up again and, through the same amount of valve overdrive, my Goldtop is right into Neil Young "Whizzer" filth territory. Perfect.

He also has a few of these:

However his most recent Gold Tops are one of these:

And a pair of these:

Re: Gold Top Les Paul

One of these days I'll buy myself a nice GT... but I already have 3 LPs (and one of 'em is a junior with a p90 so I can't use this as a rationalisation) so I'm pretty sure I can use the money towards something else as well...

Re: Gold Top Les Paul

Not as awesome as the perfect burst on a nice subtle maple top, but still very nice. ;)

I can't say that I don't enjoy a good goldtop. I actually almost bought one when i was getting my trad. The burst just sounded better, but man, that gold top looked really good.

I'm actually a fan of GTs when they have the humbuckers on there. It just looks so 70s hard rock.

Re: Gold Top Les Paul

Did anyone catch Daniel Lanois' '50s P90 goldtop with Bigsby on the cover of the latest Premier Guitar? Gorgeous.

Re: Gold Top Les Paul

I've been jonesing for a '56 reissue for years.

I'd take a Goldtop over any of the bursts any day. Plus, on the cheaper end of the LP scale, a GT gives you some visual separation of the top from the back on models that don't have binding.

Re: Gold Top Les Paul

You haven't seen Goldtop unless you've seen the pair Dan Strain (aka Danocaster) owns. I've seen them somewhere and they have so much mojo it's wrong.

Here they are. I'll PM him on TGP later but I think he won't mind us drooling after his guitars.
