used on the G&L S-500, amazing tone, they are ceramic magnets so they sound a little hotter than stratocaster pickups. They use less winds so they are quieter also. Plus there is more bass and I believe just an all around better tone. They sound great clean, and with distortion.

From what wood is your MIM Strat made?

Many Fender MIM Standard Strats and Teles are constructed from several pieces of Poplar. In my experience, Poplar lacks the desirable acoustic properties of the Ash or Alder that you would expect to find in a US-made model. Note definition is poor in both the treble and bass frequency registers. Once you know this, you can choose a set of pickups that will compensate for the shortcomings of the wood.

Since you are not expecting "true", "vintage" Fender Stratocaster tones, any of the Rail models would fit the bill. The rippier, the better.

There is a strong case to be made for EMG active replacement pickups. These will impose their own distinct character upon your guitar.

Somebody has already suggested the EMG DG-20 pre-wired David Gilmour set. (3 x EMG-SA + Midboost + Expander.) You could probably get by with just the pickups and the midbooster. By avoiding the pre-wired signature range, you can choose between several different "flavours" of active Strat sounds and appearances. (With or without polepieces showing.) Again, the rippier, the better.

I suggest EMG-S before the EMG-SA because its less mid-rangey sound will compensate for the MIM body.
