Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Couldn't say, having never out A4s in the WLH.

I'm comparing them by the tone that comes out of them. The magnet is as much a part of that as the screw/slug alloy and type of wire and so on.

Probably not best to fixate too hard on the issue. No matter how people like to think its all about the pickups, there's also dozens of other elements at play as well...not least of all, those knobs on the front of the amp.

Who do I think I am? I just received the Seth in the mail today and just pulled the trigger on the SNS trembucker . Can't wait to see how this turns out. I got every magnet to try as well so this should be fun. Thanks for all the help. I will most definitely keep everyone posted

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
Me too! I'm soo excited. I just got this guitar about 5 weeks ago and now it's going to be like getting another one once I change the pups. Not to mention a custom harness from BCS. Just all top quality stuff in ever aspect. Going through my Mesa Mark III and I'm chilling pretty. This stuff gets me excited! Pumped!

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Yeah, I'd love to hear about it too. I suspect you made the right choice, though.

Ha! I am still waiting for all of mine!

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Ok guys I'm ready to report back. I got the SNS and put it through some tests.

This is a very cool pup. In this guitar it had alot of bite and upper mid presence. I like it. But the more I played it I felt it needed more lows. The output was perfect though. Not to hot and not to weak. It is just before the verge of a typical hot pup.
So to compensate for the need lows I tried a few magnet swaps. I tried a A4 (stock), UOA5 and an A8.
The UOa5 was a spot in the right direction as far as adding lows and low mid to mid. It did give it more of that vintage vibe people say this magnet has. This particular mag brought the output down some. I have had the magnet for about 4 years sitting around and it used to be stuck to other magnets so I'm not sure if it stayed fully charged. I love the dynamic harmonic feel to this magnet. But the mids had a weird schem to them.

Next is the A8. I just got this from Dennis recently and this is my first time dealing with an A8. I have all the others in stock. Holy ****! I totally see why so many people love this magnet in bridge pups! The tonal spectrum is just more of everything. I got my deep bass now and sharp mids with great high end. It bumped the output more which I was tring to avoid because this pup is right at that " just before" level but even though it went up the tone never got harsh or overbearing. I can't believe how smooth the frequencys are but still have tremendous presence and cut. I really like this SNS A8. I wonder if I'm the first to do this?

So I have a dilemma though. As much as the tone is perfect now I am missing the harmonic richness feel and dynamics of the other alnicos. So I don't know if I should just deal with it and enjoy it or do Duncan's 21 day exchange and try to find a different pickup that gets me this exact tone but with the richness in feel I'm slightly missing. I don't think an A3, A5 will be like this A8 in tone. Maybe I can try an A2 but I think it won't sound as present as the A8. Is there any Pickups that can get me what I'm after? If you look at the tone profile of the alternative 8 I think that's what this sounds like but this pup is not as hot which is what I like. I'll probably keep this one unless you guys have any ideas? Brobucker? 78 A8? Talk to Boomer? Lol

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Did you buy it direct from the Duncan company? If so, Are you saying you swapped magnets in that new pickup?

Forget that exchange thing I said. I understand the rules. If i get a new pup I'll throw this one on Reverb

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Yeah, I know Duncan company reps have been advocates of mag swapping in the past (as well as other, more radical mods), yet it seems to be in violation of the warranty.

How long have you spent with the pickup? Have you thought about putting it to stock condition and giving it some more time?

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Been playing it everyday for about a week. Yes I did. I think it just doesn't have enough meat with the a4. The upper mids are nice though. Cuts through very well. I think a8 sounds best in this guitar. It's a hollowbody but all maple so it brighter

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

Yes amp tweeks. I think the a8 is dope it's just a tad more modern. I think I'm gona keep it

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

I started a thread about mag swaps in the newer Duncans, but apparently nobody had begun doing it.

It's interesting to hear about swaps in the SNS. I've always thought the A4 was a bit hi fi, lacking the bounce of A5, chewiness of A2, or power of A8. Speaking of which, you should try a regular or roughcast A5.

You might prefer WLH, or you could also try an A5 or unoriented roughcast A5 in your Custom.
