Good bridge pickup for a burstbucker neck

I have 3 SG's. #1 has the 57 combo, #2 has the sh-5 custom and a whole lotta humbucker neck and #3 has a burstbucker 1 and 3. The #2 is my all purpose guitar, I can play anything from B.B King to Metallica. The #1 is the one that I grab the most. I really like the alnico 2 magnets. Some people say 57 classics are aweful sounding, well I think they have no idea on how to set up there equipment. I met Derek Trucks in 2007 after he put on an awesome show. The first thing I asked him was, what kind of pickups do you have? He replied stock 57s. The next day I had a SG with 57 classics and haven't looked back. Well anyway my question is what would be a good bridge pickup for my burstbucker 1? I want to replace the burstbucker 3, I cannot get use to it. Maybe I'm one them people that I was talking about earlier and just don't know how to set my amp up for it. People say they're similar to the 57s but not to me, it's just so thin sounding and I'm constantly using nothing but the neck pickup. I really like the burstbucker 1 neck and want to keep it. I need something that I can get in zebra and that also can be split. I'm really leaning towards an alnico 2 but really doesn't have to be. I really don't want something real hot but really would like it hot enough to play a little Metallica and something that can get some good pinch harmonics. Thanks for any help.

Re: Good bridge pickup for a burstbucker neck

I had a BB1&2 set in one of my Les Pauls. Never could bond with the BB2 at the bridge. Replaced it with a PRS 59/09 and it's a wonderful pairing.

A lot of players have been very happy with the Whole Lotta Humbucker bridge in SGs, I think.

You might also consider the Slash bridge, it's a slightly overwound Alnico II Pro. Sweet natured, but still a little rude.

Yeah I've thought about a Slash bridge but I don't think I'll be able to wire it up to split. As far as wlh goes, I wouldn't mind one if I can't find an alnico 2 for it. I have a WLH neck in one guitar and I love it. It even blends well with the sh-5 custom. But I'm just trying to go a different route this time.

Re: Good bridge pickup for a burstbucker neck

The problem is that when you increase the power to an Alnico II-based pickup, you tend to lose the tightness in the low end for Metallica-type stuff. Perhaps an Alnico IV, like in the Saturday Night Special?

Pearly Gates. It's made to solve all the problems you say you have. It plays well with all PAF-type neck pickups also.

That's what I've really been thinking about getting. I'm just tired of that thin sound from the bb3. I'm fine with the bb1 in the neck. From what I've read about the PG it seems to be what I'm looking for in the bridge.

Re: Good bridge pickup for a burstbucker neck

The Pearly Gates is nice and all, but I wouldn't say it's much thicker than a BB3.

Re: Good bridge pickup for a burstbucker neck

Thr PGb is a FANTASTIC PAF type. It's very lively and touch sensitive. It's one of my favorite pickups in the neck and bridge of a Gibson style guitar. With that said, a PGb is NOT very thick sounding, at least, in the modern sense. If you want something that's big and thick while still retaining PAF flavor, check out the PATB-3. It looks strange, but has a tight bottom, thick highs, and a vocal quality to the mids that I hear in a lot of PAFs.

I'm a 59 fan. That being said, I've got a Goldtop LP with the 57/57+ combo...Robben Ford City, and I wouldn't think of swapping. I almost always do swap PUP's...not this one.

Yeah that's how I feel about my 61 reissue SG. I would never even think about swapping the 57s out of it. The rest of my SGs will get swapped eventually.
