Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

And yes, get the Behringer HM-300 pedal when you get the chance, those are about $30. Turn the distortion off, turn the EQ knobs up most of the way, and put it in front of an already distorted amp, it'll give you the Swedish Death Metal tone without adding noise.

My happy spot on the hm300 is volume at unity (same on or off), eqs maxed and the gain at around 2. Its really mid heavy/boxy rock tone. Then you push that box with the fz300 set to boost. Right into Dismember.

If you know anyone in Thailand.....or ever visit ..lol (they're just impossible to get a hold of otherwise...)

This can't be beaten for < $50

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

That little Crate amp is actually not bad. I've played through one of those before and thought they didn't sound half bad. You can definitely get a death metal sound (you're talking high gain, right?) out of it with a pedal. People bash Crate amps but they're sometimes better than the major brands offerings IME.

And in reality there are very few amps that are gonna give you high gain by turning the knobs, you'll almost always need a pedal for that sound, imo. There are a ton of pedals you can use - Rocktron's overdrive pedal has insane amounts of gain, and you can buy them used cheaply. I have a Boss Super Feedbacker right now that can really throw out a lot of gain if needed. But there are MANY.

You dont need to spend a fortune on a pedal to get a certain sound. Btw I always buy used - eBay or CL, definitely much cheaper than buying new.
Well, I did notice that the amp itself can't produce high gain. So i definitely need a pedal for that. I have a pair of EMG 81-85s that i have not installed, would that increase the gain? It currently has Schecter stock pickups. Would you say its worth getting the pickups replaced with 81-85s? I don't know how the wiring is done but i think i can manage to get a luthier to install them for under $30. I am definitely gonna check out some of Boss distortion pedals.

That's one hell of a pedal there man. Sadly, I don't have connections to Thailand. I would hands down get this in a heart beat and at that price its almost a steal imo. Do you personally own one?

Hmm intriguing. FINALLY, I can take advantage of my geographical location!

Yeah, well I did man....& it's a fantastic pedal. Supposedly a modded Metalzone (though it sounds nothing like one). I left mine behind at my jam space a few weeks ago & that's the last I saw of it. Can't tell you how crappy that felt & how pissed it made me :angryfire

It'll take me a while and a whole lot of effort to get another :(

@Archer: There are some awesome pedals being made in Thailand..ever heard of Shark pedals? A couple of guys here use them & they sound great... there's also the NXGeneration (Visa Distortion, Warm Drive) stuff which is awesome.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Yeah, I've heard of, and have tried them. The Moo Kalei pedal is a fav... sadly it's too transparent and clear for my uses when I first tried it.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

My local Guitar Center has the Randall RVC 5-watt tube combo on clearance for $199. It can do modern metal without a pedal easily. Pretty much the same as the RD5, but it's a GC exclusive that doesn't have an emulated out.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Ok, I'm not a metal fan at all , but I enjoy some of that scandinavian black stuff once in a while….
The other I was jammin' with a buddy who's really into death metal… and I managed to get an amazing sound with my Danelectro FabTone pedal….

Yes the EMGs will probably boost the gain alright, for $30 I think its worth doing.

As for all the amp recommendations I think you should start w/a pedal. Yeah you'll eventually probably replace the amp but the pedal is something you'll most likely keep anyway. Believe me get Bad Monkey, or a Boss SD, or a Rocktron & your little Crate amp will definitely put out some serious sustainy, lush high gain. You can buy used pedals on ebay all day long that wont cost you a bundle. :)

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

If you plan on getting a better amp eventually, then I would advise you save up for it and just get it too. There is a good chance that all that will happen if you spend 100 on a distortion pedal right now is that you will eventually get the money for a better amp, then your pedal won't help you much and chances are you will either give it away, keep it but forget about it, or sell it for chump change. Then at the end of the day you ended up spending more money than you needed to. So in order to prevent this from happening, you gotta choose wisely, maybe even considering spending a little more on a pedal so you have one that will still be of use to you when you start to acquire new gear.

I wouldn't be saying this if it didn't happen to me. There were so many times where I wish I could get the money back I spent on the pedal to just put towards the amp so I could get it quicker, even if it was only $100. While the cheap distortion pedal could make a cheap little amp sound acceptable it can cripple the sound of the more decent amplifiers, so you might not ever use it again after you get the better amp unless you modify it, and even then other stock pedals can catch your eye that do the job better that you would probably want. Then after it is modified, it actually drives the value down of the pedal so you have a harder time selling it if you decide to as well. This can be prevented by buying a decent amp first or getting a versatile and worthwhile distortion pedal to keep around, even if it means spending a little extra. If you check out the rigs of your favorite artists, you would probably see that most of them don't use high gain distortion pedals, but probably little overdrive or boost pedals while they prefer to get the gain pumping from their amp. This is a popular choice because it keeps your distortion dynamic and responsive to your playing style instead of clipping the signal too much before it hits the amplifier and makes everything sound to fizzy or flat. So you should choose a pedal that has a good "midrange" (not to be confused with EQ) of distortion qualities and flexibility, while at the same time having enough distortion capabilities on tap to satisfy you now. That way the pedal you get will still be of use to you in the future and you get the most out of your money.

That is just my side of the story because I have been exactly where you are now. However, I am not totally aware of your financial status and what you plan to do with your guitar playing in the future so in the case of distortion pedals that would work for you:

Boss- Power Stack
st-2_top_gal.jpg
Ibanez- Sonic Distortion
SD9M-xlarge.jpg
VOX- Satriani Satchurator
Satchurator-large.jpg

I chose these because they crank out good amounts of gain, are pretty versatile on their own but geared towards heavier metal, work great with a good amount of amps, are slightly under or at $100 and can be found for even less expensive used, retain their value well enough, will come in handy in the future, and are all modifiable with relative ease if you choose to do so later on.

YUP . . . you never know what his local craigslist will produce.
I have some good experiences with Craigslist. Its usually my go to for things i want or need asap. So ill definitely check out to see if they have any pedals/amps worth looking at or even buying. My city has quite the number of posts on Craigslist.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I dont agree youre gonna give away any pedal you buy now op. The vast majority of guitarists out there have an overdrive pedal on their board, no matter what amp theyre using.
Also you can buy used pedals all over the place, no need to spend $100. I have an assortment of Boss and BBE pedals on my board and have never paid more than $35 on one.

There's no doubt the OP will eventually get a better amp, but if his funds are low and he wants a certain sound I think getting a used high gain pedal will get him a good start. Jmo of course.
