Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I have some good experiences with Craigslist. Its usually my go to for things i want or need asap. So ill definitely check out to see if they have any pedals/amps worth looking at or even buying. My city has quite the number of posts on Craigslist.

Great idea! :)

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

$100 Budget? Go on Craigslist and find a 75W Peavey Vypyr.

I see them listed all the time in the $100-$150 price range and most guys will deal. You want at least the 30W version of the first-gen, but if you can swing a deal on the 75W, do it!

Seriously, the Vypyr will cover ALL the tonal ground you could possibly need until you have a bigger budget. It models the clean and dirty channels of many killer amps and also models some of the most popular pedals on the planet. It's quiet enough for home use, loud enough for practice/small gigs and it'll even handle basic recording duties into a computer if you're into that sort of thing.

There is no better "bang for the buck" when you're utterly strapped for cash and trying to upgrade your tone for the time being.

Op, go to GC and get a 15-30w modeling amp. Do it.

This is something you could do as well, OP. But definitely try any amp out thoroughly before buying, some players like the tone of the built in fx, some dont.

Again though I would buy such an amp used on CL. Check the site frequently, the deals are out there. :)

GC has essentially become the CL of low end amps. They take in trade ups and then have to move it out. They'll pay out about half of what they expect to make on it and they're pretty set in price as they operate on a variety of searches. They made this error in their business plan, and its for us to reap the rewards instead of dealing with people on CL who don't understand that, say, the Carvin amp they are trying to sell streets at 549 in 2007, so they should ask 499 for it instead of 249 for a used, off brand amp that needs modding.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I had a Line 6 amp that sounded like absolute garbage until I threw a BOSS ST-2 Powerstack pedal on it. That thing made my amp actually usable in a live band setting, and not only that, it sounded pretty damn good. It definitely kicked the snot out of any of the other distortion pedals I tried, including the popular Metal Zone.

It does pretty much emulate that classic half stack type of tone and it has more gain than you'll ever need. In fact, I only had it about halfway up and got a really tight chunky sound.

Be careful when you say "has more gain than you'll ever need". Nine times out of ten, you'll be absolutely wrong.

I had the ST-2. It got extremely noisy before I got enough gain out of it.

The original poster is asking for death metal. Does anyone responding play death metal?

I do.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I have an HM2, I could do it - but that is a finicky pedal.

And the Peavy bandit Dom showed does not need an OD (But I like the bad monkey idea….). The Sheffield loaded 1st/2nd gen Transtubes are bad@$$ mofos

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Sorry but are you serious?

All he has to do is buy the pedal.. mod it.. and buy a good amp? The dudes on a 100 dollar budget... SMH
You're talking to someone who has pieced together what I consider to be a solid metal sound by spending a $100 bucks here and there over the years. If you can't afford everything at once, go piecemeal and work towards what you want. I stand by what I said.

Sorry but to me it seems like a suggestion to spend less money upfront and more money in the end over time. ymmv of course I'm just trying to get the most out of the kids 100 bucks instead of a band aid solution for now... then pile on 4 more band aids to get something ok. But hey thats just my suggestion tis all good.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

What do you use to get your death metal tone?

Using certain tricks to drive my amp harder, such as changing my picking style, changing the EQ proportions, tuning lower for extra growl, increasing the volume of the signal hitting my amp, and so on. I have a processor which gets me some gain, but it sounds so horrible it kills my mood every time I plug it in. I don't use it.

I mean what gear.. what pedals.. what pickups.. what amp

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I use solid state amps, just like I've been recommending in the thread.
