Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

MXR Fullbore: Trumps the Metal Zone.

Boss Metal Core: This is only good for one thing and it does it real good: chug, chug, chug.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Be careful when you say "has more gain than you'll ever need". Nine times out of ten, you'll be absolutely wrong.

I had the ST-2. It got extremely noisy before I got enough gain out of it.

The original poster is asking for death metal. Does anyone responding play death metal?

I do.

:firedevil
I play Thrash and Death Metal, so you could say I do. I'm more along the lines of Old School Death Metal though, and not hardly any of the newer stuff, but that's not the point.

When I said "More gain than you'll ever need", that pretty much means that you don't have to have the gain cranked on it to get a good sound. In fact, that's when I felt it got really buzzy sounding, but if you get it just before it starts to sound buzzy, then it's perfect. If he wants just a tad more gain, then more power to 'em, but personally for me, I like some articulation bewteen the notes, and honestly, half the time you always think you need more gain when you really don't.

I didn't really find it to be all the noisy in my experience, but hey, I'm not gonna claim that I'm right and you're wrong. That's just how the cookie crumbles I guess.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Sorry but to me it seems like a suggestion to spend less money upfront and more money in the end over time. ymmv of course I'm just trying to get the most out of the kids 100 bucks instead of a band aid solution for now... then pile on 4 more band aids to get something ok. But hey thats just my suggestion tis all good.
It absolutely is. Get a MT-2 used for little bucks. Good for bedroom practice. Then Get a decent solid state used for little bucks, drive it with the pedal, good for band practice. Then mod the metal zone, even better tone for band practice etc. etc. It's only a suggestion because it's worked for me. The OP can do as they will.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Which is what? What pickups.. pedals and amp?

The same one I posted about in my debut thread, and which is listed in my profile.

Pickups: Ceramic 700T and 650R
Pedals: An awful Zoom G1 digital processor, which I don't use
Amp: Procraft BS-15

You can also get any decent distortion box and a graphic EQ like Boss GE7. You'll maximize your investment this way, more versatility.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

EQ is really the key to ALL great tones that are achieved. No sense of EQ, no balls. Period.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Ok, so first off i wanna say i have a crappy amp (Crate GX-15)...it literally produces one sound and that's about it, and its definitely not the sound I'm looking for...

The OP said it himself in the very first post. Dude needs a new amp. There are plenty of quality solid state options in the $100 range that will improve his tone immediately, give him more sounds on tap and be far more responsive to the addition of pedals in the future (assuming he doesn't want to go with a fully loaded modeler like the Vypyr, which would be the best bang-for-the-buck solution, as it handles these styles with ease).

OP: If you grab the pedals first, follow the advice others have given about purchasing both a Distortion and an EQ. It will give you the most versatility and you should be able wrangle in a pair of quality units on the used market for under $100 very easily.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Distortion + EQ > Distortion only

That is why I love my Source Audio Classic Distortion. It has separate EQ settings for all 6 presets. And yes you can get death metal tones out of it.
