good low - medium end 7 stringer?

nuntius

Boogeyman of Tone
oh man i went G3 last night and satch had a 7 string JS - or at least i'm 99 % sure he was playing one.

i've only played a 7 for about 5 mins, and it was a really crappy one with a vintage trem set floating... but the thing was out of tune and i gave up wrestling with it, so i havent had much experience

Im looking in the sub 500 pound category (bout 800 dollars)

it needs at least a bridge humbucker and NOT a floyd

i want this to be a fairly versitile guitar also so it doesnt have to be an all out metal beast - i got some ideas with open tunings to use it in my proggy band.

thanks

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

Dean EVO Special 7 if you can find one used (don't make 'em any more)

The Avalanche wasn't too bad either ... but I love my EVO

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

ESP Stephen Carpenter Signature 7-String Baritone.

The only seven-string/baritone i've ever wanted even a little bit.

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

was that the guitar in your old avatar?

it looked sick man!!!

how much would i be looking at?

deans are kinda rare over here though :(

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

Yeah that was my old Av

It cost me probably $700 Can. which XE tells me is 284.453 GBP (go figure)

Since gear costs more over your way (that I know fo' sho') as well I'm not totally sure how much you'd be looking at. But check around at local guitar shops to see if there have been any offered up for sale second hand or used

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

A Used or NOS Jackson RR-7 or DR-7 would also be a good choice :)

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

i just looked round the 3 main shops near me and none of them have it :(

what about this though - its 399 (second hand) and already has dimarzios installed... which are gonna be better than stock but if i dont like them i can always change them

its a maverick species 7.

mavericks a british company that has their axes made somewhere in the east and then theyr put together and set up in england. many ppl i know and guitar mags rate them above ibanez's in the same price bracket and the F1 i played gave my RG 570 a run for its money for sure

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

Looks interesting, like a cross between an RG and a Soloist with a Tune-O-Matic...

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

yes a tuneomatic!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank god not a floyd!

i've had it with trems for now, maybe i'll get a non recessed vintage trem or non recessed floyd later on in life but for now im hardtail all the way.

what other 7's do you guys recommend?

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

Here's two really inexpensive suggestions... first, the Ibanez RG7421. Great guitar, can't say enough good things about it. The second is a Schecter Revenger7. I got this thing for $75 at a local Music Go Round, and its awesome. The Schecter is a totally different animal than the Ibanez, having a more traditionally shaped neck. I prefer the Ibanez, as I have smallish hands, so the flat neck is easy to manage. Both guitars require a pickup change, however, as the stocks are garbage.
Overall, I'd recommend that you go with an Ibanez. I played a bunch of non-Ibanez before I got mine, and decided I didn't like 7s. However, after I played my RG... :)

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

Both of these guitars require an upgrade in electronics and possibly a new nut. However, if you can find one at a good price, they're pretty decent. The V is nice because it has a korina body. The Les paul has an alder top I think (mine might be maple, I couldn't tell but I really doubt it would be maple).

The stock pickups are medium to high output ceramics and rather bassy.... like invaders would be the best comparison I could give you. I like em because the necks have Gibson profiles, except for the whole 7 string thing.

Re: good low - medium end 7 stringer?

Schecter Omen 7 owner right here! It's a solid well made guitar. The stock pups are kind of thin and trebly- not much bass end response in them. Swapped them out for a SD Custom and '59- sounds great now. Nice fat neck with ex jumbo frets. Comfortable contoured sculpted top. Tonepros locking TOM bridge. Feels a bit heavy for Basswood- I suspect that it's either mahogany or maple. I recommend it- at a bargain price of $349USD (no tax no shipping), it's a no brainer...
