Good pedalboard?

I'm in the market for a way to transport (and possibly power) what will wind up being a collection of 5-6 pedals . One will be a wah, but the others will be small stomboxes. I'd like to keep from spending a huge wad of cash, but I know that I'll have to dip a reasonable amount into the wallet to get something quality. Begin the list!

Re: Good pedalboard?

I've got an NYC pedalboard I'm not using if you want to save some cash...

Re: Good pedalboard?

have you considered building your own?
the only obstacle with doing that would be somehow making a case out of it, or protecting the pedals somehow when they're on the road.

i'd post pics if i had them, but i'll tell you about what i did. i made a rectangular box with a slanted top out of plywood. on the back face of it, i mounted a power strip to power my pedals. on the top and on one side i mounted a pair of 1/4 jacks, so i'm able to keep all the patch cables plugged right into the board for my pedals that are in the loop. i covered the whole thing with a thin black carpet, so i can keep my pedals velcroed to the top. the only thing i don't have is a lid that latches onto it for hauling it around.

kinda hoopdy, but it holds up well and it gets the job done.

Re: Good pedalboard?

Also, I won't be running my cables the way he is, I'll probably just get a Dunlop DC brick and power all the pedals from it and run the whole board off one plug.

Re: Good pedalboard?

I got one of them FURMAN pedalboards. It's great. Very roomy and even comes with it's own power supplies, three power cord inputs, velcro, durable carrying bag, stereo inputs, etc. It's got it all!

Re: Good pedalboard?

I've done a bit of reading on the Furman boards, but are they worth $200? Seems kind of pricey...

I paid $220 for it a while ago and it's one purchase I have never regretted. In fact, it's one of the most useful things I could have ever done. Words cannot express the joy that happens when you can organize your pedals and transport them around.

What seems pricey at first, is quickly forgotten with time and all the use you get out of it. I love that everything is high quality. Furman is known for their power conditioning expertise (you see many of their units on pro's guitar racks).

Those NYC pedalboards look nice and for the price, you really can't go wrong, but I am extremely happy with the Furman and will never sell it. I love how compatible it is with everything and it's great to have a pedalboard already powered.

Re: Good pedalboard?

It says it comes with 8 power cords with a barrel-type connector on the end, is it the size that will work with Boss/MXR/etc. pedals??

Re: Good pedalboard?

dont spend that much $ on a board...get some plywood and some zip ties, and a padded keyboard case. spend money on the pedals, not the case. Even go to a machine shop and get a 24" piece of diamond plate and drill holes in it- it will be $20.

Re: Good pedalboard?

I'm definitely leaning more towards building one, but powering all the pedals is my only remaining concern. If I build one, I'll likely be using a Dunlop DC brick or similar device to power them, however I don't know if they suffer from any ground-loop problems... anyone with experience?

Yes. It does have three outlets to plug in AC adaptors just in case there is one or two pedals that don't have the typical 9v outlet. There is also one power cable that hooks to where you would put in a 9v battery and powers it that way (very cool IMHO). That means that if you have a pedal that just runs off of batteries, you can power it without any!

If you want to save money, buy a Dunlop DC Brick or the Voodoo Labs one. However, if you want quality, you have to pay for it... and IMHO, Furman is definitely way up there and well worth it. Meh, to each his own...

Re: Good pedalboard?

I bought one of these boards. They a pretty good boards, powers up your pedals and would have enough room for 5-6 pedals and comes with a carrying case. They might be a little cheaper made than others but mine has never quit on me. And they are only $30 so your not out much if you mess it up.

Re: Good pedalboard?

That's what I have right now, and it only has 2 cables that are compatible with my pedals, and seems to have some nasty ground loop hum problems. I suppose a big reason is that the AC adapter for the board doesn't even have a ground plug on it.

Re: Good pedalboard?

I've got an SKB PS-35 that will power 6 pedals as long as they're 9VDC and center pin negative. But this leave my Whammy pedal out of the loop so I have to use a wall wart for that. My board works just fine for me but if I had to get a new one I've go for one of those Furman boards :smoker: those are rad... and they'll power anything!

Re: Good pedalboard?

I had an SKB powered board; it was a noisy P.O.S. and finally died on me. I’m going to get a Pedal Train Jr. and a Voodoo Pedal Power II to replace it this week. I would HIGHLY recommend the Pedal Power if you go with a non-powered board. From my experience, the Dunlop Brick isn’t that great.

Cheers,

CJ
