Good phaser pedals?

Still hunting for pedals.

I went to a store and tried out a phase 90 pedal... it makes you sound fat but the effect was very mild, actually I'm wondering if it was a bad pedal because I remember trying it a few years ago and being more impressed.
I've tried an Ibanez Tone Lok phaser and was more impressed by what it could do and the phaser effects it could produce. Now I'm checking reviews on HC and the reviewers there like it better (yep it's build like a tank :14:)... the only thing was - it is a little sterile when compared to the Phase 90...

Any other good phaser pedals that I should look into?

I need something that could work well for funk, EVH and chords with a lot of warble.
We mainly have MXR, Electro Harmonix, Boss and the other big names, boutique pedals are harder to find... but I'm open to all suggestions.

BTW,
I ended up buying an Ibanez Tone Lok echo delay... I like the pedal.

I'm in the same boat as you, it is tough finding many phasers outside of the name brands. I'd like some info as well.

I use an older Boss PH-1r--I think its the best of the Boss pedals I've heard.

I used to use the big, ol' clunky AC-powered Mutron Phasor--really good pedal, but big.

The MXR Phase 90 is still hard to beat. I think among the new ones, you have to get the EVH one to get the good tone.

And the really, really big Gibson Maestro 3-speed Phase Shifter is another vintage pedal with great sound--though I have found many of them to be noisy.

It's not very boutique, but I'm happy with my Boss PH-3. It can be dialed in to pretty much any phaser sound, but it does take some patience and tweaking . . .

I went through a few Harmony Central reviews... most people just rate all the phasers highly... hard to make a differentiate only from the reviews...

Well, they rate everyone highly, except for Boss but it's easy to take cheap shots at Boss, even when they make a nice pedal.

Nice reviews, we have most of those pedals here, and they are even fairly priced... even Maxon are not that expensive compared to the prices in the USA (guess the are just really expensive everywhere).

I am good buddies with B Bent (Greg) and he used to have this old school lookingElectro-Harmonix/Sovtek Small Stone phaser that I thought sounded great! I'm not positive if this is the exact one, if I recall correctly his might have been even older BUT...

i do like the boss ph1r phaser.......the only problem it has is a slight volume boost when turned on..........

My favorite was the old Maestro unit I had...you have to run it with a looper so it doesn't suck tone. I think Jimmy Page used one.

lex666 - I couldn't find one to try... I would probably get it like a good obedient customer - and then get something that I really need (I have a soft spot for Ed).

i've read that the pigtronix envelope phaser is a great pedal, but i've never actually experimented with one. its probably worth trying out because my pigtronix echolution is pretty toneful. :eyecrazy:

The Boss PH-3 is a cool phaser; its "step" mode sounds awesome. I have an Ibanez PM-7, which doesn't sound very natural, but I love the weird sounds I can get from it. I also have a DigiTech, which sounds pretty natural, but the step mode isn't nearly as cool as the Boss.

To really understand the beauty of the MXR phasers, you need to hear the script or early block logo 70's versions, because the Dunlop reissues really are crap by comparison. I have a script Phase 45, and early block logo Phase 90 and Phase 100, and they are all very different but truly beautiful. I love the versatility of the Phase 100, it can do what the others do and a few things they can't. The 90 is just a classic, and the 45 has a subtle sheen that can't really be found anywhere else (except in the mild settings of the 100). It's rude of Dunlop to put the name "MXR" on their dross, because they bear little resemblance to the classic 70's pedals which created the legend.

ditto wahwah...I have my original script 90 I bought in the 70s...and a script 100 my son found at a swap meet for 25 bucks. The phase 100 has some crazy sounds but works perfect for some of the cover songs we play. I never used any newer MXR phaser, so I can't tell ya mine is better...so I'll just say it sounds great, good luck.

I'm going to try out the Small Stone next week... less knobs always makes me happy. I hope it would have the right tones for me, because you can't really tweak it.
