good price on a silverface princeton?

There's a guy around here selling what is described as a silverface princeton (non-reverb), early 70s, no issues -- for $375. I haven't played or seen it, but assuming it is as described, what do you think of the price? :smokin:

Re: good price on a silverface princeton?

Thats a good price on a 70's Non reverb Princeton...keep in mind it will more than likely need a cap job, new tubes and maybe a new speaker. If it is a post 70 a new cab would also be agood upgrade for better tone but not a must.

Re: good price on a silverface princeton?

so it's a fair price but not a steal....?

Yup! A SF reverb model will run you anywhere from $500 to $700. The Non-verb models are less desirable to most because they don't have the extra gain stage. (i.e.) 4 pre amp tubes in the verb model, Only 2 in the Non-verb.
Still a cool amp.:smokin:

Re: good price on a silverface princeton?

It's a fine price and a great amp but as Ken pointed out a Princeton Reverb will stomp a non reverb in the dirt and the only real issue with SF Fender amps is the age and the cabs...by this time those amps are 30+ years old and many of them have yet to get a cap job and need them plus maybe it needs tubes, if it has the original 30+ year old speaker it might need to be replaced as well then like I said the cabs on SF Fenders are just not as good as the 60's BF amps were. Fender switched to an MDF bafle very early on and soon after when to junk cab wood as well...by 1974 Fender cabs just were junk...that said my Twin Reverb still has a mid 70's (junk) cab and I still use it and it does still sound good but I know with a better cab it could be better. The guy that is gonna do the cab is in the middle of moving so he's backed up but it will soon be changed.

The point is if you want a non reverb princeton and relize you'll more than likely end up sinking money into it then go for it, personally I would hold out for a reverb version but some guys like the non reverb amps a lot.

Re: good price on a silverface princeton?

i really was only going to get it if it was a dead steal -- i have a classic 20 on its way to use as a practice amp which i know will need tubes and a speaker - and i'm planning a strat project -- so i think i'll take a pass on this one -- :smokin:

Hmmm. My PR is a 79'. Maybe that's why I have a Buzz gremlin in the cab?:smack:

None of that was said to upset anyone...like I said my cab my Twin is mounted in is the same mid 70's CBS junk.

Sometime in mid to late 1969 Fender started switching to MDF bafle boards and by 1970 they were all MDF which is completely dead tonally speaking then they started to cheap out on the rest of the cab using lesser quality wood and by 1974 they were just junky cabs.

A new cab is a pricy upgrade for an amp but in the casr of a 70's Fender it is well worth it...you'd be surprised by how much more solid the tone will become not to mention the cab will actually strat to resonate!
