Good (simple) auto-wah

I looked at the Boss autowah online, it looks like it does more than I need, & confusing array of knobs. Just need your basic autowah effects with some tonality setting, and no noise or tone sucking....

Re: Good (simple) auto-wah

The first one Boss made, the TW-1, sounds like a perfect match for you. It's usually available on eBay for a relatively low price.

I bought an EHX Micro Q-Tron not too long ago. Pretty simple and it sounds really cool. New they're like $85 or something, but I'm sure they can be had much less used. Check 'em out.

Re: Good (simple) auto-wah

Both the Boss TW-1 and the Q-Tron are gain dependent envelope filters, not auto wahs. The TW stands for Touch Wah. They are modelled after the original Mutron III. It's actually a much funkier effect than an auto wah, which is basically a preset sweep at a designated rate, whereas a touch sensitive envelope filter operates on picking sensitivity, opening the filter at a particular point of pick attack. I've got a very early TW-1 and an original 70's Mutron III, which is an incredibly funky beast. It's what Stevie Wonder used on his Clavinet. If it's particularly an auto wah effect you're after, there was the Boss AW series, but they're a bit lame compared to the touch wah effect.

Cheers.....................wahwah

Re: Good (simple) auto-wah

If you are looking for a true "auto wah" like wahwah described, the only ones I know of are the two Boss pedals (AW-2, AW-3) and some multi-fx units. However, if you are looking for a nice envelope controlled filter, there are a multitude of options, I love the clips of the Tonefactor Analog Filter. Check them out on their site and on Youtube.

Re: Good (simple) auto-wah

I thought I had an auto wah, but it is now clearly an envelope filter. I have a Maxon AF-9, and it does the job very nice!
