Good strings for Rock/ Metal

Re: Good strings for Rock/ Metal

Seriously?

Buy a few sets of strings from various manufacturers and find a set you like.

That's it

The journey is the reward.

Fender Super Bullets in 9-42 for my G&L guitars with the DF Vibrato. I believe the bullet end helps with tuning stability.

My Gibsons and Ibanez electrics get D'Addario XL in either 9-46 or 10-46, with the Ibanez guitars getting 9-42 (though this may change). The Music Man Sabres get 9-42.

I've got 16 acoustic dreadnaughts, and generally use D'Addario EXP or J-Series Phosphor Bronze, depending on usage. Most get mediums, one gets lights and two get their hybrid bluegrass gauge. The Tak 12-strings get the PB light EXP sets. I also have some Martin SP and SP Lifespan medium sets for my 6-string dreads and these are also high-quality strings. I HATE Elixirs...my Taylor sounds so much better with the D'Addario strings. And the D'Addarios have less tension, too!

I experimented with strings for many years before settling on the D'Addario, Martin and Fender strings. I like their quality and the D'Addarios are available everywhere. And using the standard 9-42 and 10-46, I'm usually able to get these sets cheaper than most of the odd gauge sets.

When it comes to keeping track of multiple guitars (I have 60!), standardization is a good thing. Even better, I'm getting excellent quality at good prices...not compromising at all.

I am going to have to try those D'Addario strings. I love my Taylor and have always used Elixirs on them since Taylor recommends them. However, I feel like my tone with the guitar is lacking something. I also have to play 10's or 11's because I have nerve damage from a back injury. I could benefit from reduced string tension.

I have always disliked D'Addario and Dunlop and Fender and Gibson strings. Ī used EB Hybrid Slinky's forever, but in the early 00's I found Snake Oil Strings, as an alternative to the expensive Pyramid that some folks had recommended to me. I loved them, but they are out of business now. I've been using Curt Mangen 9-46 Pure Nickel for electrics. I do like them, but the tension seems a bit stiff sometimes. I need to try some different strings too.

Thanks for the tip on the acoustic strings. I'm going to give them a try.

If I had a tech I’d play D’Addario Phosphor Bronze in 13s on my acoustic and Ernie Ball slinkys In a custom gauge for electrics. Since I don’t and have two kids I play Martin Lifespans on acoustic and Elixirs on almost all electrics. I don’t love the tone of the Elixirs, but I prefer them too dead Slinkys/XLs.

I am in the process of putting mostly NYXL 10's on my guitars.

I love GHS Boomers though.

+1 This. I love digging into my strings and they last a good while too. The 10s have a good low end punch due to the 48 . I've been converted to Dunlop over the last two years. They make good strings.

Since you want 9s tho, I would recommend the Dunlop or D addario 9s. You're still going to have to buy multiple packs and venture to see what works best for you.

Just got NGD yesterday-YAY-. Seller put EB Cobalt 9-46s on it and sent another pak, thoughtfully. I would've had to be all cowgirl and go for 10s, but he knows how knew I am with still misbehaving fingers, but I want to bend, and tap and and. Tutors say I have to do chromatics chromatics chromatics. In a minute I'll see if I got anywhere close tuning by ear. At first they felt all bendy, like too easy. God knows what's on the other guitars I've been neglecting. No shop around here.
