Good tremolo pedals?

Re: Good tremolo pedals?

The Trelicopter looks awesome I just bought a Joyo trem on eBay I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: Good tremolo pedals?

I just can't believe how many different versions of trem pedals there are. I for one don't believe it should be an expensive effect, given the simplicity of tremolo circuits. I mean, it makes your volume go up and down real fast (or slow).

If you're handy with a soldering iron and you'd like to try a first build, this would be a great suggestion: http://www.buildyourownclone.com/tremolo.html I've got one on my board and I like it. In fact, I like it better than the trem on my Fender tube amps. Simple, straightforward, and doesn't do the helicopter chop sound, so it behaves very much like a Fender trem.

Re: Good tremolo pedals?

I really just wish Wampler made a Tremolo pedal. Maybe by the time I can afford to do this, he'll have one out.

Re: Good tremolo pedals?

I've had a Nova modulator, Demeter Tremulator, Tone Freak Mello Tremo, and now the Catalinbread Semaphore.. I think the latter is the best of the bunch for me (can be subtle if you need it), but I have found that I really need tap tempo, so it'll go out as well..

There are an unbelievable array of choices. Don't know why...

These days, it really is a trem buyers market.

Tap tempo, multi-speed, panning, wave form mods, level control, you name it.

Important question on that point to the OP - what do you need it to do?

That's a good question, and it's hard for me to answer. I'm really not sure. I've got a good handle on what I need from overdrive, delay and compression, but I haven't gotten much into tweaking my tremolo. The way I'm using mine now is slow pulsing, soft wave forms with a deep cut. We are recording our first album this weekend, and it will be used on two songs for that. When that's done, I'll post some clips of the songs that use it, maybe that will help narrow it down a bit.

Also, on the clone thing, that's something I want to try eventually, but I'm not exactly experienced with a soldering iron (unless you count using one for Ptex on skis).

Re: Good tremolo pedals?

Also for a more specifically modelled tremolo (with cool reverb) the Strymon Tremolo/Reverb looks awesome and from the clips sounds amazing just not in most people price ranges.

Re: Good tremolo pedals?

I wouldn't toot the horn of Duncan pedals unless I really liked them, but I think my favorites of the line are the Deja Vu and Shape Shifter. They don't mess with the natural tone, they have tap tempo, and they're infinitely tweakable.

The thing I like about the Shape Shifter is that it's like a Fender tremolo that you can actually manipulate to pulse EXACTLY how you want it to. Not many other tremolo pedals give you that much control over every aspect of the effect. I guess I call it dragging or rushing the wave. If the Shape Shifter had come out in 1965, it would have been a huge classic. If you liken tremolo to ocean waves, it's like creating their shape from the swell to the crash.

+1 to all of this. I own a shape shifter and it's VERY good... easily the best tremolo pedal I've used and the first one I liked enough to spend money on.
