What are some good, less expensive tubed heads, and how would explain theirs tones?

peavey classic heads-early-ish smooth breakup, awesome for ANY classic rock/dirty blues tones
Old blackface fender heads (Showman, Bandmaster)-awesome clean sounds, smooth tones perfect for blues, jazz, funk and with the right speakers, dirty classic rock.
When you're checking out the lower end of the tube amp spectrum so to speak, it's a good idea to simply go with a combo. A hot rod deluxe or deville will more than do the job right for many genres.
