Got 2x12... sell the 4x12???

I've had a Laney 4x12 for a while and it has done a number of gigs, but i recently got myself a Marshall 1936 cab which i am using for gigs with my new band. I have been very impressed with the new cab, it is loud, it projects very very well and it is so much easier to lug around. Overall, i feel the 4x12 is pretty much obsolete now so i may aswell unload it.

I have 75% made my mind up anyway, but just wondering amongst the gigging musicians out there if situations have commonly arisen where a 2x12 does not cut it and only a 4x12 will do?

I have used a 2-12 at gigs for many years. I got a 4-12 a couple of years ago but it's too large to fit in my car with all the gear so it's just for the home studio. I don't know of any gig situation where a 2-12 wouldn't be sufficient. In the studio though, it never hurts to have options.

4x12s look and sound great if you have roadies to move them for you.

I've been using 2x12s for years and the reduction in size and weight more than compensates for any difference in the sound.

I picked up a 4x12 a few years ago when I bought a head from a guy who didn't want to split the amp & cab. I used it for a few gigs but it was totally unnecessary and far too heavy. I have no regrets about selling it and going back to my 2x12s!

Wise words. There are plenty of far less cumbersome ways to compensate for a reduction in bass, presence, whatever. Two-by-twelve cabs are the bomb.

Yep. The 4x12 sounds great, but weighs a ton. A good 2x12 is almost as good and weighs almost half as much.

Word. Not that it is a fair comparison, but when I played through a peavey windsor 4x12 cab, it sounded tiny compared to the sound I now get with a mesa 2x12. Like I said, not the same league of gear, but the evidence is there.

2x12 rocks.

honestly ive never found a cab, any cab whether its 1,2, or 4 speakers, that sounds as good as the one i currently play. its an old 80s randall 4x12 thats magical. randall doesnt know what it is exactly, and all my searching has only shown me theres 3 different versions of the same cab. so im stuck with it

Another 2x12 owner chiming in. I've rented 4x12's for some gigs, and I've never really felt that I'm getting anything extra from them.

Thanks for the input guys. I reckon ill unload it and get something more useful :)

Re: Got 2x12... sell the 4x12???

I've got a Buzzbomb 2x12... and it really does fill room nicely and people always think the other cabs are plugged in when they come over to jam... so do this.... unload the speakers out of the 4x12, open the back up and keep beer in there... lol.

hmm... as much as id rather have the money it could be awesome to turn it into a fridge! :)

Re: Got 2x12... sell the 4x12???

One of my favorite rigs is using one of my Mesa Mark Series 112 combos on top of a Mesa 112 Theile cab. Open back combo; closed back, ported cab on the bottom. Air, and projection. I also like to use the Maverick 212 on top of a horizontal Recto 212--same deal. On a small stage, the tiny footprint of the 112 Theile is a blessing. I have a Mesa Halfback 212--it's not that much smaller than my Mesa 412. The 412 Halfback sounds great, and has a compact footprint the size of a Twin Reverb. So, I'm fortunate that I have enough cabs to cover almost any need. I almost never use the 212 Halfback or the 212 Recto by themselves, though. I lean to using either the 112 combo mini-stack, the Maverick combo half-stack, or using a 412.

In your case, the one reason I might see to keep your Laney 412 cab would be if you had the matching Laney head. It might be easier to sell them together if you had a matching set; assuming that at some point in the future, you might want to sell the head.

Still as gas prices rise, vehicles shrinking, clubs getting smaller, and aging muscles getting older and weaker (LOL!)--there's less incentive to carry 412's around.

Another option is selling the Laney cab (subject to my reservation above) and buying a SECOND 1936 cab to use with your rig, should the need arise for a bigger stack of speakers. The second cab is good as a spare if something should happen to the original cab, or could live in your practice space--for less hauling.

Blimey gotta see a pic of your rigs! Im not too concerned about the head. Even though it matches the cab, i find the tone just right so i dont wanna get rid of it too soon.
