Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

wow $30k and NO FREE SHIPPING?

My only problem with this is that the guy has only 60 feedbacks and NO LOCAL PICKUP? CMON! At that price I would want to see what I am getting.

I know one sold here in my area for $40,000 last year.

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

The guy has been a registered eBay user since '98. Also, when someone is no longer a registered user, you lose your positive feedback points from that person. I looked through his feedbacks and it's all steller and noticed a lot of 'no longer a registered user.' So he HAD more than 60 positives at some point. I've personally seen my positive feedback go down in points over the years due to drop outs.

I see nothing fishy at all about this auction.

If it were my amp, I wouldn't do local pickups either. There are people on eBay who have been robbed with local pickups. Big money items can sometimes bring out the worst in people. I think the seller is right on about no local pickups.

When I saw the title of the thread I actually assumed you were looking for a new amp and asking us to suggest one in a 30k spending limit..

You got that assumption when the title was in the form of a question?

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

I remember seeing those amps sell for around 18k a few years ago, the inflation on those are crazy :smack:

I'd rather have a Trainwreck Express if I was going to be blowing that kind of cash, but to each his own ;)

It could have been... like.. missing the "I" in ' I got'

It's also possible that I havent slept properly in weeks and my thought process isn't er.. thoughtfully processing? :eek13:

On the other hand. What makes them so Godly? I mean.. I can understand.. really good amps go for like 2k, (though smaller companies can do it for less.. Celtic, Mission.. all that jazz) and I would expect the absolute perfectest amp ever to go for maybe 3k.. but 30k?

Because people like SRV, Robben Ford, and Eric Johnson use or have used them. Funny that EJ stopped using his because it broke down too often and he couldn't get it repaired! NICE! Personally, I don't think you need a $30,000 amp to sound good.

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

Theres not an amp in the world worth that. I don't care who made it or who has played it. All your paying for is a whole lot of hype. You could build 30 amps that sound the same or probably better for that much money. Its not like the components are one of a kind and can you believe somebody actually bid on the damn thing. Can you say "bend over and grab your ankles.":smack:

heck yea, if'in i'am, spending 30k on an amp i'am picking it up in person:blackeye:

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

could potentially not want a local pickup because he's a name of importance? and doesn't want his address or personal information (including his ebay account) being thrown around frivilously? just a thought.

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

It's like the Marshall MG, only on a larger scale. 90% of that price is simple the name Dumble. De-goup the wiring, sell the diagrams. Everyone owns one. Everyone wins.

Dumble's are the Holy Grail of guitar amps.

You might one day, if you look hard enough, find a 59' Les Paul or a 56 Strat in a yard sale somewhere.

But the sheer lack of numbers of Dumbles on this planet as well as Howard making sure they typically went to celebs means you're never ever going to find one easily.

Are they worth the money? Well, that depends on who you are and what value you place in them. But I can guarantee you that at 30k that amp will probably double in value in the next 20 years.

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

I understand many amps and guitars have high collectors value but these Dumbles must be made of gold?!?!?!?? Is the guy behind Dumble's dead? Is that why they are so rare or is it really because he didn't make many?

This comment is incorrect. New users that leave feedback and get their accounts suspended or thrown out, sometimes get the whole comment thrown out, but you won't see it anymore-it disappears completely.

I know of quite a few people that would have 100% feedback if the seller or buyer that is now no longer a registered users account was not accounted for the negative feedback comment they left. If this was true my feedback profile would be at least 10 points less than it is now.

You might be confusing the fact that the number next to your name in your feedback represents the unique Ebayers that left you feedback. If you have 10 comments from the same Ebayer and 1 from another Ebayer, then your score is 2.

Not about the Amp thing, just thought I would clarify this...

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

I'd be so tempted to drop 30K on this if I had that much money lying around. Open it up, map out the circuit. Test all values/tolerances of pots and resistors. Then clone it. Sell the original.

But I'm sure if this guy is smart he's doing like Mike Fuller of Fulltone and covering the circuit (or parts of it) in an epoxy coating to stop theives like myself from getting their greasy paws on it. Another cool trick is to take a strand of wire and make an epoxy shape over it in the middle and run it across the board. Its basically a jumper wire that looks like a silver mica / ceramic cap. Tricksy Hobbits. :)

Re: Got $30,000 to blow on an amp?

The guy who makes Dumble amplifiers makes it particularly difficult to have them made. You have to audition/interview for one to be made, he has to like you enough to make it, he makes you the amp the way he sees fit, and he takes as long as he wants to. He's a very strange man with a strange way of making amps. Because it's pretty much impossible for the average human being to get one, you pretty much can only buy one used. they're *MUCH* cheaper new, but so hard to get him to make you one that you have to buy used. which makes the price sskyrocket

He's around....he just doesn't make many...and the ones that are out there are made for a very select audience which he decides upon.

The irony is that technically every Dumble is a custom made amp.

He also covers the guts of the amps with epoxy; you can't tell what's in there and how it's done. Others have made good headway at guessing and getting close.....

Would I blow 30k on a Dumble? Meh....sure...if I could justify having that sort of bread lying around in an amp, sure. But the odds are I never will.

It's like alot of gear out there...amazing stuff, but way more than what most mortals can justify putting money into.

Well why did I have 107 positive feedbacks a few months ago and now I only have 102?

Frome what I've heare, you also forfeit your money if you call and ask when it's going to be finished. Personally, I find his business tactics nearly as bad as Gibson or DiMarzio. But he makes good amps, and some people are willing to put up with it.

As far as shipping, I don't have a big problem with the "no local pickup" thing for the reasons stated, but it does kind of rub me the wrong way that you have to pay for overnight shipping.

My biggest question is why would anyone put Groove Tubes in a $30,000 amp?!?!?!!!!!!!!!
