Got a doozy of a project...

Picked up this cheapo Dean Vendetta body and neck for change on nother forum.

The description of "Bad red and black paint" didn't exactly capture the scope of just how bad it was. I am 99.7% sure the paint was Testors model paint, and I am 100% sure it was painted on by dumping the jar out and smearing it on . There were, no kidding, dried clumps of paint in spots at least 1/8'' thick in spots.

The best part, tho, is the hot rod flames someone "engraved" in the top with what appears to have been a ball point pen or maybe it's the back that was sanded with 80 grit sandpaper and THEN smeared with paint Not really sure what to say about that!!!

I started stripping/ sanding it before I took pics, but here's a couple of shots I took during a break....

Not sure what to do with it, I'm thinking perhaps a camo job and EMG's.

You guys have any suggestions? I've got a ways before I finish it with anything.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Yeah, I saw some of his Vendetta threads. I'm going to have to remove a lot of wood to make this one as nice as any of his, someone REALLY dug into the wood with sandpaper in spots.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Smooth wood filler over it with a plastic putty knife, then sand it out. That way you won't have to turn it into a Teisco.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Yeah, I was thinking just that. I'm not going to try and make it perfect, tho, there are some MASSIVE flat spots that aren't going to be hidden with wood putty, tho, particularly between the pickups and down towards the bottom edge of the body. They obviously never heard of a sanding block. It'll work just fine for the gouges and the ball-point flames, tho.

Somebody on another forum suggested a Desert Camo, that might just be what I do. I should be able to hide the worst of the flat spots with creative eye-trickery with paint. I've got a pair of orphan EMG's, I think this will be just the ticket for them.

If it's going to be a metal guitar. Rising Sun graphic with a Gibson 500T and some other ceramic neck pickup.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

make it a cheapo hendrix monterey pop guitar tribute! just add fire, the paint and wood alone are almost there :D

Instead of sanding off the old paint, get a can of Citrus Strip and use it.It'll save you alot of time. As for color, How about good old flat black?

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

I've actually stripped the paint off with some Jasco's since the pics were taken. I just sanded the top some on the night I got it, but I went to the hardware stoe the next day for stripper.

I've got the top and sides sanded pretty good up to 220 grit right now, it actually looks loads better, not even like the same body. The back is still a wreck, tho, I've got a lot of work on that. It looks like 120 year old barn board, but not in a good way.

As for black, that's a possibility, but I've already got 3 black guitars. I've been considering a silverburst, too, but tha will depend on how good the sanding comes out.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Made some progress tonight, sanded the heck out of the top and sides with 180 thru 320 grit. Actually got most of the gouges and surface blemishes out, much to my surprise. Not much done to the back other than stripping the first layer of paint off.

The back scares me.
