Looks good. Now fill the neck humbucker cavity and the tone pot and switch holes.

I thought about it. I am going to fill the tone pot hole for sure no matter what I do, but I'm undecided on the pickup hole. I've got a pair of EMG-85's that need a home, they might just both go in there.

How did you fill yours?

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Did a test spray with some primer. Still needs a few holes filled, and it will need grain filling, but it looks loads better than I thought it would.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Coming along faster then I expected. Didn't go with the "authentic" desert camo, but came up with something I like. Quick mock up....

BONUS PICS

Ever wonder what EMG's look like underneath the covers? Yeah, I went there....

Black one is an 85, the "Goldish" one is and 81, the spots on the top are where I had dummy pole pieces glued to it. At one time I had chrome covers on them Why? Just cuz...

Word of warning!!! Should you get the urge to take the cover off an 81, be warned. THEY STINK!!!!!

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Look's great man.

Thanks!! I've got some touching up to do, the masking tape I used is crap, lots of runs I need to fix.

did you use the back part of a shotgun shell as the knob? I really hope so because thats awesome

Yeah, that will be the knob. It's easy to do, I just need to drill the inside of the shell out so a cut down Strat knob fits in it. Just glue the Strat knob in, voila, Shotgun shell knob. I'm thinking of cutting down a .223 rifle cartridge for the toggle switch.

Tight i bet you could make money doing that.

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Still got a few touch ups to do, but I got impatient and decided to put her together last nite. She's mostly done, doesn't look all that different from the mock up pics. Oddly enough, when I strung it up, the intonation was very nearly dead on, except for the g string being a few cents sharp.

Plays surprisingly well, action is pretty low, no buzzing. The only problem with the frets at all is at the 23rd fret on the high "E", it frets out when playing on the 22nd fret. Easy enough to fix.

Perfect home for the EMG's, too. Wired as simply as possible, just a volume and a switch. I put the 85 in the bridge, because I like the 85 better as a bridge pickup. Never tried the 81 as a neck pickup before, I like it. Nice and crisp.

Dig these funky tuners. These were on my old 55 Junior when I got it, been in a box for over ten years. They are really old Schaller tuners. I didn't know this until yesterday, they actually have PLASTIC housings  Never even heard of that before :laugh2: Anybody ever seen these before?

Waitaminute - you tore the covers off of the EMG's...to put some covers right back on?
Looks killer though, man. You should be proud!

Thanks!! Truth be told it's pretty half-asssed, but it's only supposed to be a beater for jamming anyways.

Technically I tore covers off EMG's to put Chrome covers on them for my Epi G-400. Took them out of the G-400 ages ago. They've been sitting idle in a box for over a year, so I put them in this. Hence the return to black plastic covers :eyecrazy:

Ahhh...gotcha. I'd be ****ting kidneys taking apart an EMG with all that epoxy!:eyecrazy:

Re: Got a doozy of a project...

Believe it or not, it's actually pretty easy. I used a pair of what we call "gate cutters" which are basically wire cutter with a flat side. We use them in plastic injection molding to cut the parts we mold off the runners.

Anyways, I just used the blade of the cutters to gently pry the edge of the cover away from the epoxy-encased innards. Once you get it started, it's pretty easy to peel it back far enough to cut the side with the cutters from bottom to the top. From there, it was just a simple matter of carefully peeling the rest of the cover off. Once you get to the top, it just peels off.

I've seen other guys grind it off with a dremel, this was WAY easier. You just have to be careful.
