Re: Got a new toy!

Cool we will all be sending you our MIM Fenders to strip.

Yeah, that way we can all admire those gorgeous 7 piece bodies in their raw natural state. :barf:
( and then Dominus can do his witchdoctor thing and can make it sound and play better than a Les Paul).

I spent a good 45 minutes on a body the other day with my random orbital sander and got about halfway done. I'm hoping this will take care of at least the larger flat sections on the front and back and then switch to the orbital for smaller sections/curves etc.

It really depends on the sound you're after, but a good thick sounding pickup like a Dimarzio Breed or a PATB can help it sound more like an LP. As for it playing better, that goes without saying. The Strat bridge is WAY more comfortable than a Tune-O-Matic. :D

You can see the filler cap on Jerry's where you add the Kerosene and that cord isn't for power it's a pull start.

Re: Got a new toy!

Tried it out for 15 minutes this morning. Makes quick work, but it's a little awkward to use. I either have to figure out a way to hold the body in place while sanding, or work on my one-handed technique, as there's quite a bit of power here. I tried it out with 60 grit... What I may need to do is a few passes with 40, then a few passes with 60, then finish with 80.

Re: Got a new toy!

Yeah but can you find it in your basement? :D

Hey, I've still got tons of stuff buried in my garage that will never see the light of day. I bet if I organized all my tools I'd have 2-3 of everything. :D

Re: Got a new toy!

I start with 60, but I do all of mine by hand with a sanding block. Old fashioned, yeah I know.

If I did that with all my refinishes I'd look like Arnold Schwarzenegger from the late 70s. :D

Re: Got a new toy!

I haven't tried stripping a poly finish yet. Will a heat gun not help break down the finish ... or a methylene choride based stripper?
