I used a heat gun a few times, sometimes you get lucky and the paint starts flaking and chipping off (or it warms up enough to become rubbery and slides off), but sometimes it just doesn't want to budge and you start burning the wood under the paint.
I've had okay luck with Klean Strip's Aircraft Paint Remover but the fumes from that stuff are worse than the fumes from painting.
I haven't tried stripping a poly finish yet. Will a heat gun not help break down the finish ... or a methylene choride based stripper?
