Got Chunk? Duncan Distortion or DiMarzio Super Distortion?

I have used the search function, but I did not find a solution. 1,000 appologies if this sounds sooooo repetitive.:6:

Which of these two have greater bottom end chunk. I will be using this in an Epi LP bridge with D tuning. Other commonly available high output ceramic alternatives (besides the Invader) are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

The DD chunks, the Super Distortion roars.

Just changed out a JB with a DD in my RG. Can you say CHUNKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Distortion if you want chunk. Super Distortion if you want to sound like KISS.

Re: Got Chunk? Duncan Distortion or DiMarzio Super Distortion?

While the Duncan Distortion is chunkier than like a JB, the Dimarzio Super Distortion DEFINES 'chunk'. NO Duncan save maybe the Invader(haven't tried it yet) has the bottom end chunk that the Super D has...none.

The Distortion has more upper mid/treble crunch....but DEFINITELY NOT chunk.

I use all 3 of these pickups and they all are really kinda different. The Super3 isn't far behind the SuperD as well.

Hello Brother

I don't really know how a dimarzio super distortion sounds in a Les Paul..i´ve got one on my Charvel strat, and sounds great for blues, rock n roll or heavy metal. In my opinion, you just notice that it's a high output pickup when soloing. For rhythmn, it's not a "metal monster" like most people think. I think the duncan distortion should sound more colorfull, more agressive and more open, and I wanna try it both on my Charvel and on my Gibson explorer.

You're pretty much right on with this assessment. The Duncan Distortion is a brighter pickup that's more open sounding because of that. The lighter bottom end makes it more aggressive than the SuperD...although thinner sounding at the same time. But I wouldn't say it's a thin sounding pickup...just thinner than the SuperD.

i am gonna be an a$$ and say the duncan custom.

i've had both the sd and dd in a strat and the dc knocks them flat in the chunk department. i am sure the guitar has a part to play as well.

Re: Got Chunk? Duncan Distortion or DiMarzio Super Distortion?

When I swapped out a JB for a custom in my Epi LP I thought: finally some chunk!!! I cranked my amp and made the house rumble!
After a while I wanted a more singing lead tone so I changed the magnet turning it into a C5, Perfect! Still has that chunky tone going on but is more scooped and has slightly rounder bass response.

Btw. I feel that Epi's have weak bass response compared to Gibsons. Same kind of tone but weaker in the bass departement. Must be because of the wood they use.
Getting a good bridge and tailpiece will make the sound fuller. Every little bit helps IMHO, I tried to get as much chunk out of my LP and it's fine now.
I tune in D also, love the darker sound!

The Super Distortion in my Fender Strat sounds HUGE. And that guitar is a thin and twangy li'l thing otherwise. I can only imagine it sounding bigger in a Les Paul. Can't say anything about the other pups.

The Custom Custom sounds pretty big too. Lots of mids...plenty of bass, not as high-output so you can let your amp do more of the work.
