I used to have a large assortment of effects pedals. Eventually I started culling the herd until I eventually didn't use any pedals. I found this to be in direct correlation to my playing ability. i.e. the better I got the less I felt the need for effects. Now I just run the guitar straight into the amp and I get more compliments on my tone than ever before.

So my question to you is how many pedals do you use and how integral are they to your tone? :)

Re: Got FX?

I own and use about 6 pedals:

Boss OC-3 Octave
Boss TR-2 Tremelo
Boss PH-3 Phaser
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Dunlop Crybaby Wah
Digitech Whammy (Reissue)

...and I did have to buy a board to mount them on.

Mainly, they're for playing other artist's material, seeing as I haven't developed a sound that is 100% (or even 50%) mine. The thing is that I only use pedals when I'm at home, and that's been seldom as of late, so I'm more of a guitar-chord-amp guy to be honest.

Re: Got FX?

I just use a handful. I used to have all the multi-effects crap but got sick of it real quick.

Now I have 4 Boss pedals...Super OD, Phaser, and Chorus. When I get an amp with a loop, I'll use my Boss digital delay as needed. And I have the noise suppressor, but haven't had the need for it.

I use the SOD quite a bit, the chorus not too much, and the Phaser a bit more than the chorus.

Re: Got FX?

i have 2 distortion pedals & i use in-amp reverb, just a little

and i really only use one of the distortion pedals

Re: Got FX?

well i got the POD, but i have the floorboard, which is one big pedal. not sure what u would count that as.....

Re: Got FX?

10. Spread over two boards.

About 90% of the time, I'm only using the volume pedal. The delay is mostly for reverb-like slapback (rhythm), or echo (leads). The stuff on the left board is for overdrive, a lo-fi filter (the brushed metal box), modulating my clean sound (the phase and chorus), or modulating my feedback (everything sometimes). Since the amps always tweeked for metal, I use the SansAmp for getting strait preamp style gain without driving the power amp too hard (punk).

Re: Got FX?

I'm only using two pedals right now an SD-1 and DS-1 both Spina modded. My JCM has a great reverb so the only other things that I might like is a good analog delay and a wah pedal. Pretty simple, like me!

Re: Got FX?

I will rarely use a wah, delay, or chorus pedal. 99% of the time its just the amp and guitar.

Re: Got FX?

I either just run a dirt box and a wah into my amp or I use the full blown pedal board..if I use the board the signal goes like so...

Guitar-->Tuner-->Boss Octave-->DigiTec Whammy (original)-->Dunlop Crybaby-->Axis Fuzz-->Pro Co Rat-->Sovtek Big Muff-->Lovetone Brown Source-->DOD Envelope Filter-->EH Electric Mistress-->EH Small Stone-->Maestro Mini Phase-->Boss Tremolo-->Boss EQ-->Boss Delay-->Boss Delay/Reverb-->amp

That's 16...and I know it's crazy...but at one time I had to cover ALOT of ground! After that I just never took the board apart...

-The Boss octave is set for one octave down
-The whammy is set to do octave up slides
-The axis is for vintage fuzz tones
-The Rat is my main crunch tone
-The lovetone is my overdrive
-The Big Muff is used when I want my guitar to sound like a hair dryer! :laugh2:
-The Electric mistress is set for a med/slow long sweep flange
-The small stone is set for a fast almost Leslie type sound
-The Envelope Filter was put in to do a cover of Superstition...never happened...never remove the pedal!
-The mini Phase is for a slow phaser tone
-The Tremolo is set for a very sharp, pretty quick stuttering type tone
-The EQ is set to make the guitar sound very low-fi then kicked off for maximum impact
-The Delay is for long delays and or reverse effects
-The Delay/Reverb is for slapback delay with a hint of reverb

this is so dumb...after looking at all of it...It's just so dumb!

And NO I do NOT use an FX loop!!! How about that sh*t!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: Got FX?

I got three, a Vox wah, a Roger Mayer Axis fuzz, and a DOD chorus. The only one thats always plugged in is the Vox.

I wanna get a vibe sometime.

Re: Got FX?

no pedals live usually, but one hellish rack setup which includes a preamp/processor, guitar synth and looping device.

Re: Got FX?

I usually only use three pedals, all of which I built myself:

-Modified Ross Compressor, three switch-selectable recovery times and much higher quality internal components for lower "hiss" that shows up in a lot of compressors when the "sustain" control is at more aggressive settings...makes the Keeley Compressor look (and sound) primitive ;)

-Liquid Drive, a modified Ross Distortion (very similar to the MXR Distortion + and DOD OD250). Once again, higher quality internal components for extremely low noise operation. Smooth and "fluid" overdrive with a lot of available drive range.

-Tremulus Lune tremolo. Designed by Dann Green of Commonsound/4ms Pedals, it's probably one of the most versatile tremolos on the planet. Mine is the basic model with the optional ramp up/ramp down mod. Very quiet operation with no LFO clicks or ticks.

Re: Got FX?

Here's what I own at this point:

Boss TU-2
Boss NS-2
Pro Analog Dual Drive
Loooper (A/B/Y footswitch custom made for me... pure sweetness)

Here's my goal:
Pro Analog Supaquack wah
Clay Jones Psycho OD
Tone Czar Echo Czar
Van Amps Reverb unit
Demeter Tremulator
Boss Loop Station (to fill the void of another guitarist for now)

I am completely nuts, but all of them really do have a purpose in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Got FX?

This is what FX I own:

G2D Custom Overdrive
Modded Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer
Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster
Digitech Whammy II
Dunlop Crybaby Wah
Boss TU2 Pedal Tuner
Boss SD1 Super Overdrive
EH Big Muff Fuzz
Boss CE5 Chorus Ensemble
Boss GE7 7 Band EQ
Ibanez DE7 Delay/Echo

With the band I'm in at the minute, all I use is the Wah and the SD1 along with my amps distortion channel (reverb switched off). I'm trying to incorporate the Pickup Booster and Tubescreamer into my rig for a variety of drive tones, and also use the tuner as a power supply.

I'm having 2 pedalboards made for me; 1 to house the tuner, SD1, Pup Booster and Tubescreamer, and the other to house FX that I would use in the loop (Chorus, Delay, EQ and I plan to add a Phaser). I'm not sure how much I'd use the Modulation FX with my current band, but atleast I've got them if I ever feel the need to use em' :)

Re: Got FX?

I have a PODxt too, but I don't usually use much in the wat of effects, although I like to experiment with crazy sounds every now and then...

Re: Got FX?

I have 2 different amp/guitar setups with 2-3 effects pedals used with each. My main pedals are:
Line 6 DL 4
Germanium Boy booster pedal
Modded Cry Baby 535 Wah
MXR Phase 90
Bad Horsie Wah
Original Sans Amp

With recent additions of an EVH Phase 90 and an MXR Phase 45. Oh and a Boss EQ is on the way too.
