I've come a long way, I used to be an effects junkie eons ago, doing the whole rackmount effects thing and all. Now, just ONE good multi-effects unit will do MORE than enough for me (namely for 'verb's and delay, I'm picking up a Yamaha Magic Stomp in the near future), I'm of the mind that if you can't get a great tone from just your axe and amp alone, you need to reevaluate things. For distortion, I'll NEVER use a pedal, always from the amp itself.
The other thing I find is that if you run through a ton of pedals and such, you LOSE so much tone presence, punch and signal quality, nothing hurts my ears like a cheesy over-processed guitar sound.
