Got my BLACKOUTS Today

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

so what IS the difference between a blackout and a livewire?

i'm sure i'm an idiot for asking

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

blackouts arent emg wannabes it just seemed like a trend lately for every manufacturer to come up with their improved version of 81'85 set, out of all of these the blackouts seemed the most promising. but hey im still gunna buy and support emg but i will probably get a pair of blackouts just to have them in one guitar

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

I thought the Livewire Metals were a killer set.....another 81/85 set seems boring to me.

+1.

I don't really see the point, myself. It doesn't fill a market void (if it's true that they're just an EMG imitator). I'd be much more interested in an innovative approach to active electronics.

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

I think it's personal choice.

SD are answering a hole in their range, and offering a potentially better pickup, based on technological improvements available since the EMG's first came out. The issue of them sounding better will ultimately be down to personal preferrence and the individual ear, which if they're riffing Heavy Metal without protection could be difficult.

I agree with what others have said. I will probably put Blackouts in one of my guitars, but I won't be changing out any EMG's.

Now IMHO if someone really wants to fill a market hole they'll make their Active Humb's available with Gold and Chrome covers, for those of us who love actives but don't live in a coffin!

YES!!!

You read my mind!

I'd really love a pair of chrome covered actives for my LP!!

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

It's probably something we can offer as a custom option at some point, but I don't know what the price ramifications are. I mean, if you have to stop everything and just make 2, 3, or 10 with chrome covers, how much does that slow you down overall? I don't know. Is it worth an extra $10 per pickup? $30 per pickup? At what point would you just go full Custom Shop and have a Blackout custom wound a little hotter/weaker, etc? It's too early to tackle any of these concepts, but it's good that we're talking about it. The Dave Mustaine Livewires are an example of metal covers used with actives. EMG did it with an anniversary set. Bartolini is using metal covers on the PBF series but they're passive.

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

is 10% more tone worth the change from emg to blackouts? i mean if your playing at high gain its hard to even recognize tone after awhile, but they still sound cool and i cant wait to get a pair

Yeah.....what the heII is wrong with EMG? I really want these pickups in chrome/gold covers.

But EMG could do even more. I LOVE the way active pickups work/sound/etc...I just want more tonal/EQ options. Honestly, all they would need to do is expand their line and I'd probably never go p***ive again.

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

My problem with EMG has less to do with sound than feel. They "feel" like crap. They are the coldest, deadest, most sterile feeling pickups ever created. The only thing they are good for is cutting through tons of gain. Other than that, I hate them. It's not a coincidence that most emg users are playing through modern high gain amps that sound like a swarm of bees.

I get some great warm tones out of mine and I find them to be WAY more responsive than most p***ives.

I get the best cleans I've ever heard out of the 60 too...amazing pickup.

Sterile?? Hardly....I don't even know how that term came about to describe these.....musicians tend to think that more technology equals sterile/lifeless as the situation with most SS amps.

It's the not the same for pickups IMO.

I can name a few exceptions to this.

David Gilmour
Metallica Live
Zakk Wylde Live
Slayer Live

I think one of the bigger examples is Zakk live. When the man plays and I mean really plays live. He has one of the most woody organic tones I've ever heard.

It's all in the setup, hands, and how things are recorded.

I have to agree w/ this statement. Sadly I've heard the same comments about Bill Lawrence and Joe Barden's pickups. Anyone that has used these and actually dialed them in know this isn't the case.

I think the biggest downfall to active pickups or really anything that's different is the fact that they ARE different. People have had the PAF/Super PAF tone pounded in their heads for too long and w/ they get something different they don't cope well.

Oh yeah. I have an old SS Crate combo amp from the mid to late 70's that's all analog SS and has one of the best clean channels on it I've ever heard.

Re: Got my BLACKOUTS Today

Duh, WHY would Seymour Duncan make HUMBUCKERS? Gibson ALREADY makes HUMBUCKERS...there is NO REASON for NEW AND IMPROVED HUMBUCKERS BY SEYMOUR DUNCAN.

And WHY would they make single coils? Duh! Most Fenders COME with single coils! There is no hole in the market to be filled by these single coils.

Now take all of the reasons you WOULD give me about those two statements, and apply them to the Blackouts. thank you.
