Got my Crate Vintage Club 20 today! Yay me!

Re: Got my Crate Vintage Club 20 today! Yay me!

Aye, therein lies the rub.

I have no recording equipment of ANY sort, and not only that I am deathly shy about my playing. Once I get some decent clips, I'll probably become much less shy. But I gotta get the clips first.

I'll try!

The cleans are pretty good. Well the bass is fantastic. The dirtys are just that - slightly too muddy. But a pup change and new pots and a pedal could make this thing really really amazing.

I don't find mine to be muddy at all, even with the gain cranked to 10. You may hear the amp clear up a bit with a pickup change. I don't know if it is that, or the fact that mine has a 10" speaker (more focus). I've only played a DD, C5 and the P-90s in my Axis through this amp (all good pickups)....and I never thought it was muddy under gain.

No it's definitely the pups. They're stock Epi pups on an LP, a 5 year old LP. Once the pups and pots are changed, there'll be a WROLD of difference I know it!

There may indeed be a "world of difference", but the amp is still loose & mushy, which is exactly what it's intended to be.

Anyone that even turns their gain up to 10 on that amp, and is playing through an Axis, has something massively wrong with their ears. Even if they're playing the Axis Super Sport with P-90s.

I do recall the amp being sensitive to gain & treble back at back at Western Michigan, where the walls are cinder blocks or whatever. Maybe in a college ghetto house, with bare cement floors. That's about it.

I've debated running a Marshall combo for "pointiness" AND the Crate for "mushy touch-sensitivity" at the same time.....we'll see.

I'm older now, with a carpeted home with furniture, so I find that unless the amp is raised off the floor, the tone is simply unacceptable with it's soft, bassy attack. And I hate harsh, trebly tone, if that helps put my preferences in perspective.

When I purchased this amp back in 1999, the common track I used was "You're No Good", from Van Halen II. It's OUTSTANDING at the quieter, touch-sensitive parts of the song, but not "growl-ey" enough at other parts. Since I was rehabbing myself from the horrible sterile/icey 5150 combo, it was a welcome change, and I DID choose it over the JCM 600.

What does that mean?
