Got my Dimarzio Andy Timmons AT-1 pickup yesterday

Re: Got my Dimarzio Andy Timmons AT-1 pickup yesterday

I dont think the AT-1 is right for modern metal. Its a bit too much vintage sounding, with a lot of harmonic overtones.

Its fine for 80s shred metal, but IMO it doesn't have the right clarity for modern high gain metal styles.

Thanks mate. That's what I was thinking too. Since I'm keen on putting one into my Charvel San Dimas Pro Mod MIJ which has a very '80's shred metal vibe to it, the AT-1 may be just the pickup I want in this guitar :)
That or a Breed perhaps. I have string clearance issues so I'm limited to pickup size on this one. Currently got an EVO in the bridge and I had to raise the bridge a lot to clear it. It sounds really good though, face melting and gut punching :)

Re: Got my Dimarzio Andy Timmons AT-1 pickup yesterday

Sometimes nuance is lost over the internet, so please know there is no malice in this post.

A pickup is an extension of the instrument (guitar in this case). The guitar can be used for whatever type of music. The more gain and effects that are layered on, the less you hear the guitars natural sound. The pickup is merely another layer; it does not define what style of music is played. There are many ingredients needed to go from a clean Jazz tone to a drop tuning metal sound, and a pickup is a small factor in that.

What you say is true to an extent but I suggest you think of the pickup as the "engine" or "heart" of the electric guitar. Let's face it, no matter how good your rig is if your guitar's pickups suck, you WILL NOT get a good tone for pretty much any type of guitar music because a pickup that sucks or is ill suited to the purpose you employ it for will not be able to project the guitars qualities/nuances nor drive the amp properly. Case in point is the very good RG1451 Prestige I had, great guitar but the stock pickups sucked so badly they sounded terrible even thru my Orange Jim Root head which makes guitars sound damn good. It's important to take all the factors into account like you said. I feel that the pickup, alongside the amp, is one of the most important factors to consider. Then you must consider what type of sound are you going for. That's where experience and nice forums like these come into play ;)

Ah, of course. I hadn't noticed it, but Duncan Distortions must be a bit deeper too. It never occurred to me that there could be clearance problems with those in some guitars.

Gotta disagree. Do guys use lipsticks for metal? Single coils? You dont use a hammer when you need a Phillips, or a drill when you need a sledgehammer. If the current from the PUP is so small, the gain has to be so high to get you where a high output PUP is providing. My personal experience was with a G&L. Great guitar for lower gain, crank up the distortion was the worst sound I ever heard. 3 weeks I tried, away she went. Just wasnt for me

Some of these posts are confusing me but is the debate whether the AT-1 will do metal or not ?

Yes the distortion is, It’s typically a problem in some guitars with bottom mounting directly into the route like some ibby’s. But then again the pole piece length is a problem in those types of guitars as well, so it becomes a wash.

I will be sure to tell Jerry his G&L is no good for metal the next time I see him.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking now. The DD must be quite chunky just like my EVO.
